E46 M3 GTR Eligibility...

I've been researching the M3 GTR 4.0 and I've found something wierd on the FIA GT site...

Last year at Spa the Schnitzer M3s of Nurburgirng fame competed, albeit under odd classification.

The official results document (found here) classifies the BMW not as GT or N/GT, but G2.

What is G2?

The only thing I can gather about G2 is that another car in this class was a Porsche 996 Turbo, perhaps it is an invitation class...

Any help is appreciated.

The Mosler at the Monza GT race entered under 'G2' aswell, I think it's just some special invitation class promoters can use.

there are three Groups in FIA GT racing.

Group 1 (G1) are the competitors that will race for most of the season, in GT1 or GT2.
Group 2 (G2) is for guest cars participating in national championships, that don't have FIA GT-homologation
Group 3 (G3) are cars based on single make series.

(at least, that's what I make from the rules).

now, the BMW M3 GTR (which I believe does not carry the E46-number) was not homologated for FIA GT, so they did 2 races in Belcar to be eligible for the Spa 24hr race. that's why they were in G2.

Mosler entering all European races this season now in G2. They have changed things a little, haven't they? I thought until this year then G2 and G3 cars were only allowed at Spa, hence last year's entries like M3 GTR, and Corvette etc. But in an effort to add more competition to Porsche in GT2, they're inviting people to join in as G2 competitors to see how they fare if they don't have homologated cars. Or at least that's the impression I got from articles in Autosport.

Well, there was a TVR racing in G2 at the Donington Fia GT race last year. So they use the G2 class whenever it's deemed useful for the last few years.

I'm not complaining

I thought they'd put the two TVR's in the N-GT class at Donington last year? might have to look that up from FIA GT site or fish out my program from last year's race there. But if they were in G2, then that's fine, just makes me wonder why more people didn't do it like that.

hmmm ok FIA GT site worked and it says class was "SPA2" - which I'm presuming is G2! I stand corrected!
