Test in the west

the IRL teams are currently at Pheonix raceway for their "test in the west" which so far is going well.

session 2 has just finished with some impressive times being se.

Felipe Giaffone has set the pace early on but is being hounded by Tomas Schekter, some of the new boys such as Kanaan and Dario are also doing quite well.

here is the top 10 after the second session.

Felipe Giaffone 31.8988
Tomas Schekter 32.2601
Tony Kanaan 32.3527
Dario Franchitti 32.3546
Gil de Ferran 32.3559
Scott Dixon 32.4429
Toranasuke Takagi 32.4679
Al Unser Jr 32.5747
Helio Castroneves 32.5779
Kenny Brack 32.6351
close behind them in 11th is AJ Foyt the 4th in an impressive Indycar debut with vitor Miera,Sam Hornish Jnr, Jacques lazier, Dan Wheldon, Eddie Cheever , Scott Sharp , Roger Yasukawa,Robbie Buhl and Sarah Fisher bringing up the rear.

Well it looks like honda got up to speed with no problems! Are any of those top times from a chevy engine?

Will GM be able to compete with Toyota and Honda? Chevy might be lucky to win 2 or 3 races if they don't get their act together.

Top Chevy was 12th.
The g-force looks quick straight out of the box as well!
Fontana is flat all the way round so it's engines and aerodynamics that rule.
At Phoenix in a couple of days handling and driver skill shows more. If the G-Force Toyota/Honda combos dominate there then Chevy/Dallara could be in for a tough season.
But it is early yet - time to change things still.
Could be a fascinating season.

The guys coming in from the other side seem to ahve things sewn up, looks like Sam will be lucky to even finsih in teh Top 5 this year, and as if all the small teams Tony claimed to set the championship up for have been sold down the river.

Giaffone has been dominating so far, looks like he could be the man to beat this year.

Come on, There has only been 1 test day.

And anyway Giaffone and Nunn were in the IRL last year, the 'other side' haven't got anything sewn up.

Kanaan, Franchitti and Dixon haven't though.

Anyway, the point I meant was that the teams who ar ein their second IRL season will have learned more about the cars and the racing, adn the guys who were more used to the balanced schedule will be getting used to doing ovals every time.

9 of the teams in the Top 10, and 7 of the drivers, where in ChampCars 2 years ago. That's a pretty dramatic swing.

I think Tagaki will be able to shine this year, don't be suprised if he takes a win

Major unlucky to the teams that stayed with Chevy, you win some, you lose some

is it true that chevy is dropping out of the irl next year? i hope not , becanse it would be shame not to have an american engine in the series.

AGR, there has been no official announcement, only speculation. Hopefully they will put up enough cash to compete with Toyota and Honda. I agree that it would be a shame to not have an American engine manufacturer in the IRL.

I agree as well , it needs an american based powerplant in there to appeal to the masses , and everyone loves a Chevy

Chevy are in the first year of a 3 year contract though remember to supply engines. I suppose it can be bought out though.

Some of you are pretty pessimistic about Chevy's chances after just one batch of test sessions. The only way to judge whether they are competitive or not is on the racetrack.

Isn't it clear now that the talented drivers were once driving in CART? You can't take a bunch of washed up sprint car drivers and make them instant IRL drivers, like the Earl has tried so many times before. When Chevy leaves, you'll be in the same boat as CART was last year. When the new and improved CART lends it's top drivers to F1, your "new stars" will be trying to claw their way back in hopes they can drive an F1 car just once. The only problem is, they are damaged goods now. Nobody wants an Earl driver to sit in their McLaren, Williams, Ferrari, Minardi, or whatever. Earl is a dumping ground for scrubs.

The top 2 drivers in the tests, Giaffone and Schekter, have never touched a CART car though.

As i said earlier, Chevy are contracted to supply engines for another 3 years.

Tony George's original stated vision has been blown away. Now this is the kind of series he set up the IRL to offer an alternative to.

Big money teams competing here at the insistance of the sponsors, smaller squads being squeezed out, teams who can't afford top engines being unable to compete, almost all the frontrunners coming from outside America...

There are only two reasonabel conclusions that can be taken:

a) Tony's original intentions fo rthe series were not profitable enough, so he's ubtly changed tack by trying to kill the rivals off and crush their thrilling racing in favour of his own championship.

b) That was the idea all along, with the smaller entrants in the early days, who were just as heavily funded as the new CART entrants, being mere pawns in all this.

I think you're off target boots. Read the reply Fred Nation gave in this article http://autoextremist.com/page3.shtml#note

Speculation runs rampant on the web. Sometimes it helps to get information like this. However, businesses can't consistantly put an end to every lie started on the web! Whether that business is auto racing or balloons. They have a business to run. For example. Watch the replies that pour in calling Fred a ball faced liar or worst.

why do all you guys hate the IRL? cant we all just get along? if you have such an intense dislike of it why would you come onto these pages? i may be fairly new here but my understanding is that this is a discussion forum for IRL fans. True, i will just follow Kanaan to which ever code he goes, but reading the totally unnecessary posts about how terrible the IRL is still upsets me. cant you go discuss that on the CART forum? im sure it will be much more appreciated there.

Agreed Jenna, for the record the IRL provides closer and more exciting racing than any other senior formula, with plenty of overtaking.

Although I do not like the IRL, I still don't think that just about every thread should have some bashing in it.....only a few

But that's quite a dubious thing. No other open-wheel championship drives on ovals entirely. I'm sure it's easier to pass at Michigan than it is at Laguna Seca or at the Hungaroring...
