Good question but is there anywhere, where such info was taken or recorded. |

How about
LOUD..... Take a Chevy muscle car with a 427 in it and pull all of the pipes off it clear up to the mainfolds Fire it up... Measure the decibels inside and out with it at full throttle.... that's about as close as you could come to reproducing it, anyway... I have no clue as to where you would find such info... Would they be to loud for the ALMS-they state that a car can't be any louder than 108dbs at 3/4 throttle. But then again if Porsche and Mazda can be legal?

I doubt anyone recorded it.
Modern Le Mans cars have to pass a sound test, so you could look up what the maximum decibels allowed are, and then make an approximation based on how much louder a Can-Am car is. Last time I was at Brands Hatch we were watching sportscars (GTP/Group C and Can-Am type cars as well) there was a misfiring Chevy that could be heard going down the pit straight from out at Westfield bend. |

But here is something interesting. At the Canam race here in Edmonton my dad said while they blew your ears out at the track you couldn't here them at the south side(Track was north Edmonton)but you could here a formulaford in south Edmonton.

High pitched sounds refract round corners more easily that low pitched sounds
If you stand in a dense forest and sound a gas horn, you might not be heard, but if you blow a whistle you probably will, at least easier than you would with the gas horn. |

My old friend Charlie "Dr Decibel" Kulmann, doyen of American motorsports sound control (and former Can-Am 2-liter driver), took sound readings from the Big Bore Can-Am cars repeatedly during West Coast races at Riverside and Laguna Seca, with readings from 108-117, averaging 112.4 on A-Scale Fast. These are from the no-muffler days. Interestingly, he told me just a few minutes ago that there was very little difference between the 8-liter and the 5-liter unmuffled cars. Although the cars sounded different, there was no real difference in their loudness.

Not meant to take this too far afield, but is anyone running a Reynolds Aluminum Block in Historics? I haven't been to too many historic events, and they all have featured cars other then old Can-Ams.
Although long ago memory I don't remember them being different then the big block Chevy's running in early IMSA days. The Panoz are very loud, and of course with technilogical advances they rev higher, plus they have another component to their sound as the come toward you which I assume is the air restrictors. |

I love hearing can am cars, even if they have to be silenced a bit. I love the noise when your at a track testing and there is only one car on track and its a can am. When they are round the other side of the track and you hear the heal and toeing, it just sounds lovely. Especially if you have time to go sit on the banking on a hot sunny day and just listen.
