1987 12 Hours of Sebring
Looking back at the results of the 1987 12 Hours of Sebring there are only 9 GTP cars amongst the 74 starts and every single one of them is a Porsche 962. No Electramotive Nissan, no Group 44 Jag, No Ford Probe, No Hendrick Corvette and not a single Privateer March-fill in the blank, Just Porsche 962s. Anyone know why that was? Most of those teams did the first two rounds at Daytona and Miami and were present at the next round at Road Atlanta...so what was the deal with Sebring? I can't find any reason anywhere...

I had a quick peek in Autosport - a couple of teams had withdrawn after the first two rounds, but mainly it was that Porsche were acknowledged to be far superior over long distances and the other teams were on limited budgets and didn't want to risk fragile cars (gearboxes, apparently) on a course that was hard on machinery, even if that course had been smoothed out.
IHTH. |
