AVUS DTM race
This year is my frist year has a DTM fan and i was looking up was the used to race at I and i came a cross that that there was no DTM races form 1995 till 2000. Also 1995 till 1996 there was a series called ITC what was that. Also does some one have DTM picture of AVUS in 1995 or even a picture of a DTM race at AVUS. Also soe someone know why the second race in 1995 was abandoned.

The 2nd race had a lot of sefety cars out and in the last restart there was a big pileup taking out the top 4-5 cars basicly and it was a big mess so they red flaged the race. I donno why they didnt race there in 96, but someone might know. But between 96 and 2000 there where no DTM, Alfa and Opel pulled out in the winter before the 97 season so it stoped existing, instead we had the great STW Cup that ran between 94 and 99 with SuperTouring rules. They however raced at AVUS in 96, but after the death of Keith O'Dor there in the race they never returned to the track either.
BTW, the difference between DTM and ITC was that in 95 there where 2 series, first they ran DTM where all 7 round where in Germany, and then after that they ran 5 races outside Germany and called it ITC. And for 96 they named the whole serie ITC instead of having 2 series that basicly where the same serie. Hope it answers some of your questions. |

Just a minor correction, but Keith Odor died in one of the 1995 races. A terrible and, in my opinion, avoidable accident.

I saw the video of this Rustyfan and I do agree it could have been avoidable.

I remember watching the ITC and DTM racing there on tv before Motors tv existed. Fantastically close racing!
The fact still remains, why don't they demolish the grandstand and track? They must have plans for it still? |

There's not much of a racetrack besides the Ex-Steilkurve. 90% is officially Autobahn. I don't know if there are some kind of heritage law things in place for the grandstands.
http://www.berlin.de/ba-charlottenbu...ikon/avus.html "Gesamtanlage unter Denkmalschutz" that's it. It has to be preserved as a memorial site. |

North Curve was demolished in late 60s.I went in 1991 for DTM-by train from London-first year I could get a free ticket to travel through East Germany! Main stand was sold out for Sunday by Saturday so I had to sit in the open one round the flat North Curve.
I have never seen the Lausitz stands more than about 10% fulll. |

Since the big crashes (O'dor, several F3s, Winters fiery one,....) everything stopped at Avus. As the track became too dangerous and too costly to close the autobahn for the weekend and almost zero spectators came, it's future was swiftly decided.
It was boring as well, a long blast down the dual carrigeway, cut through the gap in the armco and blast back up the road via two silly chicanes and the Nordkehre. |

Its worth noting that John Winter had a massive accident at Avus in 1994 during the DTM race in his Opel Calibra.
*edit, oh someone has noted it.* |

Who is responsible for the ad that has appeared at the end of this thread? 1937 Avus was certainly not a 'non-formula' race-maybe formula libre.Grand Prix formula cars were allowed to have streamlined bodywork covering the wheels until 1966.
