Official 2004 V8 Supercar Calendar
Monday 22nd September 2003
V8 SUPERCARS UNVEIL 2004 CALENDAR The Australian Vee Eight Supercar Company (AVESCO) announced today the V8 Supercar Championship Series and Konica V8 Supercar Series 2004 calendars. The fantastic Clipsal 500 Adelaide will once again host the V8 Supercar Championship Series season opener in late March. The most significant changes to the 2004 calendar include the omission of a round at Phillip Island, the introduction of a round in Shanghai, the Peoples Republic of China and the relocation of the New Zealand round. AVESCO CEO, Mr Wayne Cattach said the organisation had received more requests for rounds than could be accommodated. “Our teams have stipulated they would not agree to increase the V8 Supercar season beyond thirteen rounds so unfortunately a round had to be dropped,” Mr Cattach said. “The biggest move in the calendar will see the New Zealand round move to the ANZAC weekend in late April to accommodate the Shanghai round later in the season. “We have worked with the promoter IMG to reposition the New Zealand round to a satisfactory date earlier in the year. “The completion date on construction of the Shanghai circuit has forced us to run the round in the last quarter of the year.” Mr Cattach concluded. The Betta Electrical Sandown 500 remains as the prelude to Bathurst after a successful return to its traditional date in 2003. The final round of the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship Series will remain at Eastern Creek to once again be promoted by AVESCO Events. All other championship rounds will retain their 2003 dates. The 2004 Konica V8 Supercar Series calendar has revealed some major changes including a debut at Queensland Raceway as support to the V8 Supercar Championship Series. The Konica V8 Supercars will also return to Eastern Creek Raceway but not with the Championship series, instead as part of the circuits Festival of Speed on May 29-30. The Winton round of the Konica V8 Supercar Series will move from August to April and lay claim to the Easter Weekend. Race formats, point scores and 2004 support categories for both series will be announced at the VIP Petfoods Main Event. |

AVESCO must have a lot of confidence in themselves to run a meeting at a profit to give themselves another go at Eastern Creek in 2004

Why have 2 Eastern Creek rounds i will never understand.
Why drop one of the best free flowing circuits in the country as in Phillip Island is in my mind a step in the wrong direction for the category, because unfortuntally we don't have many of those great tracks in our country. |

It was said on RPM yesterday... PI for all its driver and spectator appeal, does not pull a paying crowd....

Screw the paying crowd, charge TEN more to cover the event, or charge advertisers more, do something just bring back Phillip Island.

I thought we killed that concept when we didn't show up in droves, so does this mean China is dead before it begins

Now, I got to hear some of the complaints about the freeze in Melbourne last weekend, um wonder how popular TC will be after China.
Hmm maybe they should run this thing, it's 'bout time we got a new chairman |

But how many of the fans from the 'heartland' will make the trip to China to watch the race?
By the time any of the locals complain, he'll be long gone back here and would he care? They have a multi-year deal and alot of cash coming their way from the Chinese promoters...... |

I went to china in middle of 1987 and I hate the joint.
How are they going to fit 35 V8 supercars in amongst all those bloody bicycles. |

Whil I like most of you share some disbeleif about racing in China, The fact is I wouldn`t miss it for the world. I love V8`s and will support them wherever and whenever and no matter how cold. The growth of this sport and the increase in money it costs to run a car is escalating and the Aussie economy cannot back the sport anymore. A move into China is seen to hopefully generate much needed sponsorship to keep the category alive so rather than bag it give TC some credit and lets support it and hope it works for the benefit of V8 supercar racing in Australia.
