Yoong tested at Queensland Raceway?
Anyone has news or details of the test on 28th July? Seems he ran with Gurr and the other 2 co-drivers.

There's an article on Yoong testing the BMW in today's Queensland Times Newspaper (Ipswich's Daily), it's good to see a lesser known team get some publicity & hopefully Yoong can help them to a good result in the 24 Hour.

No it is personal reasons that I was smiling for, nothing to do with the test.
His times were in the 1.14's if I remember correctly much the same as the others. |

They done article in auto action, and he was saying how other drivers were scared by the mountain but he said he was watching Bathurst over in Malaysia as young boy and that was one of his ambitions to race a tbathurst

Hmmmm - let's say you came from somewhere overseas and you were offered a drive at Bathurst - you have a test and the media starts asking you questions.
Aren't you going to try and suck up to them and tell them you 'have always had a dream to race at the Mountain'???? |

I undertand that Alex Yoong is actually a good student of the sport, aware of many categories around the world. There are quite a few drivers that have Bathurst on their list of things to do, no reason why Alex should be any different

One good reason I can think of - he can't get a full time drive anywhere else, he has a drive offered to him for Bathurst and he wants to make sure he gets that drive - so anything good he is going to say will help him.
Or should he say something like 'I know nothing about the track but it is, after, just a race track'??? |

Not sure if you saw the PROCAR racing on #7 today, Alex took a road car round the track for a few laps (it wasnt a closed circuit so it was all at road speeds....) seemed genuinely enthused about the place

Yes I just managed to catch that particular segment - however I still stand by my comments above.
Hell - give me a drive in any of the cars at Bathurst and I'll say whatever they want me to say....well...nearly anything |

Race,
I can honestly say that Alex has always wanted to race at Bathurst. Most drivers in the world love any "3d" tracks like Bathurst and Spa as it has significantly more character than a flat featureless track. He was extremely impressed with how smooth the track was and also that is was how many others had described it to him. In terms of saying whatever to get the drive, the deal was done some months ago after more than one offer was made for his services. Alex could have shown up and said the track, race, car and team were **** and still been in the seat. He is a professional and good driver, compare how he went in times particularly at the end of the year after getting some tests and experience to webber (USA and Japan)in contrast to the highly touted Pizzonia and others. I dont say you should love him but give him a chance and he will impress. |

Ross,
Many thanks for the clarification - I have no doubt what you say is true and correct. Unfortunately - and I am not saying this applies to Alex so please don;t anyone imply it is - too often people will say what they want people to hear and not the truth. And, of course, once this happens doubt is always there... Having said that - I wish him and the team all the best for the race - I briefly saw a bit of the interview on TV yesterday - come November and we shall, hopefully, see the results of all of this publicity. BTW - re the smooth track - someone did tell him that the smooth 'track' is really the road and that come November it is replaced with another surface that, for some inexpicable reason, has no grip, is a shiny and smooth as a babies arse, and catches drivers out left right and centre forcing them to take absolutely wierd and ridiculous lines? I hope someone did Last edited by RaceTime; 3 Aug 2003 at 01:31. |
