Alan Hamilton should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
FF1600 Brake pads

It was suggested to me the other day that I may be using the wrong brake pads on my Swift 92. (Could this be the reason I hit the tyre wall at Tower?? )

Any recommendations which pads are best suited??

normally i'ld say you cannot be so dumb as to consider brakepads a point, but...

i had problems with my 97 VD zetec being undrivable !
it was on ferrodo pads, as they were the latest call of fashion at the time !

running out of options i finally changed pads to mintex, and it was
like the difference between day and night !

i stuck with them most of the time, as they are easy on disks too !

alternatively i use the blue pagids on one car !
cost a fortune, last at least 5 proper meetings ( free, 2 timed and 30 min race ), but are a tad harder on discs !

also loved carbon metallic in my early days, but you need to get used to change disks when skimmed down rather than pads...


i was offered free supply of ferrodo, but told them to get lost...

1144 Mintex or 1155's are most peoples choice, what did you have? it depends on how agressive you are on the brakes, if you are very harsh (which I dont think you are) and dont require much feeling in the brakes go for 55's if you are more progressive and need some more feeling in the pedal go for 44's. If you are cooking the brakes all the time then try 55's but really in a FF you shouldnt be braking that long to be cooking them. so maybe try braking later and harder.

what pads were you using?

Can't remember the Mintex number, I will check them out tomorrow when I get back into work and let you know.

Lola should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
I used 1144 mintex on my old ff1600 (in mono spec) and found them ok. I did try green stuff pads but found by the end of a meeting i had run out of material!

Interesting comments regarding brake pads.

What would I use to on a Classic Formula Ford as a replacement for the old DS11's. We often found that standard road pads were just as good, although they wore down a bit quicker and sometimes faded under extreme use.

Is there a better alternative now available.

I have tried the MLB19's 155. No feel whatsoever. Too hard I found for a Formula Ford. 144's seem best.

But I suppose it's all a personal choice.

nope, i use a special blend of Columbias finest ferrous materials, keep it on the down-low though!

Matt just checked the car and I have fitted the 1155, this now helps explain the aggresive brake wear I have experienced.

I will now exchange them with 1144 as per your suggestions. Cheers

The MLB19's (1144 compound) for me too. Good feel and not harsh on the discs. And they're not to expensive either. I've tried others but went back to these.

It's M1144 for FF1600 and M1166 for FF1800 (Zetec) tried alsorts and these are the best.

In fact still got a couple of boxes of M1166 to sell.....
