My personal favourite is the Lancia Stratos. Cracking car, lovely engine and it still looks the nuts today and it came out when I was a baby!
I think the best looking ones are the 1976 Alitalia sponsord models. Oh and try and buy one today and you will need a second mortgage! |

Lancia 037 is the pinnacle of the pre Group B - just loved the combination of looks (pretty in a pininfarina way, but also functional) and performance.
Have to mention the Turbodelta GTV's - mad cars that should have won more than they did. |

GTV - the 037 was a Group B car.
Mine would be a toss up between the Triumph TR7 V8, and the Fiat 131 Abarth. The TR7 sounded great and was wonderful to watch, especially at somewhere like the Manx. The 131 was a great all round car, competitive on the gravel and the tarmac. |

TR7 V8 should have won more than it did - very exciting car to watch - am a bit surprised that they aren't more of a force in classic adelaide or targa?
I wasn't sure about the status of the 037 - I think it straddled the period between Group 4/5 and Group B - nice car either way. |

Lancia were the first marque to enter Gp B with the 037 according to a video I have back at home.
What group were the Big Bertha Firenza touring cars. I know its not a rally car but if it was a Group 4 car then it beats tehm all. Otherwise it probably the Stratos, though teh Fiat X1/9Abarth was nice too. |

one of my favourite cars, but there are other Gp 4 cars out there.
Of the Escorts it would have to be the Mk1 Twin Cam in Scottish Uniflow colours every time. (They put the uniflow bit on teh other end when going north of the border) |

The Lancia Stratos would be one of my picks as well. Robin mentioned the cost to buy one today, and that's true for a genuine car, but there are some good replicas around. The best replicas have an ex Ferarri Dino engine (like the original), but an Alfa Romeo V6 makes a good substitute.
Other favourite Group 4 cars in no particular order: Porsche 911SC. Ferrari 308GTB. Renault 5 Turbo. Well, it's a sentimental choice, and technically, it's from the '60s... But the Chevrolet Corvair's still the only car built here to win an international rally.
 I have to applaud the Escorts, though, because they're such simple cars, yet managed to give even the mighty Stratos headaches! |
