Something beyond 1000k?

Watching the Great Race growing up, it seemed to be more of a race of attrition. Since the start of the V8 Supercar era, the professionalism and polish have lead to it turning into a longer sprint race that morphs into a 30 lap sprint to finish.

Is a longer race an option? A 12 or 24 hour race would certainly be a test of car strength and driver fitness. There would be a few variables to work out such as finding an appropriate circuit (maybe still Bathurst), but would this be another variation beyond the sprint and enduro options currently offered

Not disagreeing with you, not too sure a longer race would change much though

But the average Bathurst watching V8 fans dont want longer races. Its too long and they dont desire to watch that much TV

I would class myself as a the 'average' V8 fan and I reckon it needs something to spice it up, a 24 hour would be awesome, not sure I would sit through it all, but certainly a fair percentage of it

Bathurst has always worked so well because it fits into the one day, people, even the average fan, can keep in contact with it all day, the start and finish for example are during 'normal' hours. I'm not sure the casual fan interest would be there outside of the normal hours.

Also, the teams don't want a 'race of attrition' or unreliability, the rules have been designed to 'sprint' them for 1000km... anything that drives the costs up too much for them these days....

Alas your not an average v8 fan, your involved in a track, you write ina forum and i believe you own some for of racing vehicle (might be wrong)

Also can i add, that part of the intereest of Bathurst is the tradition, moving this to another length would break tradition which i dont believe is a good thing

It is too short these days... Make it 1000 miles, keeps the traditional name intact and would be more of an "endurance" race rather than a sprint.

I reckon all the races should be exactly the same format, no endures at all.

The idea has merit for sure, but I agree with many of the comments saying that the average viewer isn't interested in a 12 or 24 hour race.

Bathurst used to be a 500mile race and take longer due to the cars pace, but over the years it evolved to be 1000km and this years event was the shortest total time duration as far as I'm aware. It could be time for it to be extended a bit, but I'm not sure the best way to go about this.

I feel that if the event had more crashes, more safety cars and perhaps a bit of rain and last 7 or 8 hours, this suggestion wouldn't have come up. I thought at the time that the guys were just getting used to the new cars and were taking it a bit easier than usual. Not sure if this is the case, but this year has seemed to have a lot less carnage than usual - last Saturday and perhaps Townsville excluded. I wonder if the drivers are more aware than ever of the costs involved in an 'off'.

With the professionalism in motorsport these days a 1000km race would soon be the same scenario as far as sprint/endurance goes, just with more scope for bad luck.

The Bathurst 12 hour in February is a great event , the old Series production Bathurst 500 was great because it was an enduro for Showroom stock cars which made it real interesting as a lot of the entered vehicles were registered and actually driven to the track and home again if they survived the race , IMHO the current Bathurst 1000 is not the same race as it was as the professionalism seems to have made it a sprint between safety cars .

They really need to bring back the 3 Hour Showroom Showdown on the Saturday. I miss watching that.

but hardly anyone watched the 12 hour, so its not really a good comparison.

The spectator is important to the discusion

after arriving at the mountain in the early hours of saturday morning, I always found the 3 Hour Showroom Showdown a good opportunity to have a nap beside the track, (in the old fenced off dry area) heaps of spots near the fence because no one was watching

Do you really need to have a crack at anything that isn't a V8Supercar?

didnt a top v8 team win it this it this year?

So what happens then is that the 12 hour becomes professional and it becomes a sprint race.

and then someone starts a thread saying the 12 hour needs to become a 24 hour becuase cars dont break down anymore

We already had this discussion in the 12H thread. I like the idea, but it seems most 12H fans didn't want a bunch of bogans joining their race

and the 12 hour team dont the taxis. anyway the pace of the GT3 cars over 12 hours would embarrass the V8SC teams, they run pretty much a 12 hour sprint

you really should have put a smiley after that post. otehrwise it suggest that you didnt watch the 12 hour race and the continual processions behind the safety car.

or the leader trundling around for the last hour becuase he was the only car on the lead lap, in deed for the last half of the race the only cars on the lead lap were team mates. thats no 12 hour sprint

I went to the N24 last year that was effectively a 24 hour sprint and there were no rain or fog hold ups like this year.

If team like Manthey, Rowe or Schubert came out to Bathurst they would embarass the Aus teams.

Erebus hadn't raced a V8Supercar event when they won the 12hr... they'd run plenty of AGT events and a B12hr previously though

Not sure what that remotely has to do with the discussion but if splitting hairs poorly rocks your boat then enjoy

so they weren't a team owner then?

you might want to go back and follow the discussion and not try splitting hairs poorly
and then get back on topic
