Driveshaft solutions
I am in a wee bit of bother about my car's driveshafts. The car has an Alfa engine and box but over the past few years I have changed the suspension setup to run with Imp rear wishbones and all the bearings etc. My problem is, should I get the Alfa shafts machined to take the imp stubs after the UJs?
Or shall I use the Imp driveshafts and get the ends modified to take the alfa boots etc? Will the Imp driveshafts take the power of an alfa racing engine? |

Not to sure that the Imp shafts would take that sort of torque,be safe and use the Alfa one,s.

definatly dont think i would be using weedy imp drive shafts,
although according to some friends that race alfa's that alfa suds/33's break shafts when subjected hard race use, so im not sure i'd use those either if having to modify something to fit, the alfa box uses a 6 bolt flange on its output shaft so it cant be too had to find a shaft with a cv joint on it which will bolt up to it, especailly if you enlarge the bolt holes from m8 to m10, maybe a modified shaft from a e30bmw will fit the bill they are quite similar to the alfa shafts but stronger Last edited by graham bahr; 9 May 2007 at 07:29. |

Cheers guys, if at all possible I'd like to work with what I have at the moment. I do realise that the Imp driveshafts won't take the power and the Alfa ones will need alot of modification to fit the Imp wishbones.
Does anyone know about friction welding? Mallock used to get Ford and BMC driveshafts friction welded, anyone? |

I once had a Davrian wihich had Imp driveshafts and Imp hubs. After breaking a few driveshafts, we came up with a final solution - which may be an option in your case.
We found a stronger driveshaft of the right length (happened to be Allegro, but don't shout about it!) and adapted the Imp wishbone to take the stub axle. This completely eliminated the hardy spicer joint, which I found was the weak spot, and ended up with a proper CV at each end of the driveshaft. Maybe that would be an option with your car - to change to the complete the Alfa driveshaft and stub axle? |

I bet they would not have problems if they were driving the rear wheels and the drive shaft angles were constant. |
