ARCA

You know, I became interested in stock car racing later than I did Indycars and Formula 1. However, since 1996, I have grown increasing sick of NASCAR, probably due to the overexposure and lopsided attention given to it by contemporary media. Moving to within shouting distance of Dawsonville, Georgia, home of good ol' boy Bill Elliott, where it isn't racing if it isn't stock, hasn't helped too much.

Not to say that I don't enjoy stock car racing. I like it a lot. However, I am convinced that the best stock car show around isn't NASCAR: It's the Automobile Racing Club of America. Why? Because it is Winston Cup without having to fabricate its rough-around-the-edges image to attract the blue-collar fan. Because it hasn't forgotten the bullring crowd, and still races at the half-miles in Toledo, Winchester, Salem, and South Boston. Because it puts up a show just as good, if not better, than the Winston Cup boys at Daytona, Talladega, Pocono, and Charlotte. And because it races on dirt. That's right, the dark stuff in the ground, at the state fairgrounds in Springfield and DuQuoin, Illinois.

Sounds like something straight from the ARCA marketing department

Joking aside, I agree - just wish I got to see it more often.

ARCA has a history of sending its drivers to the Winston Cup level. Look at Benny Parsons, Kyle and Adam Petty, Kerry Earnhardt, Ryan Newman and others. Those stock cars are similiar to the Nascar Winston Cup Cars, but its a different schedule because they raced superspeedways, short tracks and even dirt tracks.

There's simply no such thing as bad short track racing. Especially on dirt!
