Disheartening that a race that had seemingly done so well on many levels is only going to continue if the City of San Jose comes up with $4 million in subsidies over the next two years. The majority of the $$ apparently to be used at the discretion of the promoter.

The reviews of the race had all been positive and I recall the thread associated with it reported a good bit of bright news regarding the sales of tickets as well as the hospitality suites.

To continue the thought, under the proposed deal, the City of San Jose is picking up the cost of setup and removal of barriers, the grandstands and providing traffic control, etc. The "race organizers" are to recieve $1.5 million to use at "their discretion." From an audit standpoint it would be a real leap of faith here that any City Council would hand over this sum of tax dollars to be used at someone else's discretion. From an event management standpoint the money is needed for what exactly if the City is covering the physical set up of the temporary circuit?

I am trying to get my arms around how the event seems to have gone from being in fairly good shape financially to requiring a $4 million subsidy after Mr. Listwin promised to cover any losses until the race became more established.

It is peculiar to say the least. Perhaps the $4 million is needed to find a more sutable site to race. The Grand Prix was a success, but the course itself left something to be desired.

They announced in November the changes that are being made which essentially refine the course: the widening of some corners and repaving the area of the railroad tracks. They are also adding 5,000 grandstand seats and figuring those at $40 each (average based on their GA prices - they only had 3 day pass prices listed for grandstands) it would seem income will be increased. So it seems that things are really ticking along in a positive manner.

They are also retaining their presenting sponsor, Taylor Woodrow Homes.

It is just a darn curious thing that the promoter is doing.

Surprising news, but not unwelcome news.
