Gentilozzi on ChampCars and Ovals
Q: What are your long-term plans for oval racing?
PG: I believe individually that the great part of the history of Champ Car champions has been the diversity that was part of our program. If you can win a championship, if you can come from Formula 1 like Nigel Mansell did and win on ovals and win on street courses and win on natural terrain road courses, you have to be at the top of the list of the greatest race drivers in the world. So we’re going to try to continue that mix, and show the world that our drivers are the best. You hear all the time, great road course drivers and drivers from Formula 1 that talk about the dangers of oval racing and they don’t want to do it because of this, that or the other, but we’ve been crowning great champions who have won on both types of venues for a long time. We’re going to stay with that tradition when it fits the market and when it’s a good business opportunity. There are places in the world that really want to see us race on ovals and I think we’re glad to do that. |

I think that the last two sentences speak volumes.
Particularly with his use of the word "when", and the prhrase "places in the world". |

I'm all for the mix... I love watching my favorite drives negotiate a 30mph chicane or a 230 mph superoval.

I think our mate Kate will be ok with it. Not like we're running 8 or 9 ovals any time soon.

The best ChampCar races of the last few years were on Ovals. Germany and Fontana to name but two. I'm hoping that the Vegas race will bo on an Oval.
I'm primarily a road-course fan but learning to love the Ovals. |

If you wanna use asterisks, the entire word should be done as such. Otherwise, it's dodging the autocensor.

Yeah! and be careful of words like weigh****chers
Seriously, even though they are not my favorite (particularly on TV)Champ Car should be at least 1/3 oval racing to keep the diversity mix to a level where if you don't perform there too, you don't win a Champ Car title. |

I'd like to see a truly balanced schedule; 25% street circuits, 25% natural road courses, 25% short ovals and 25% superspeedways, rather than grouping all ovals together as if they are all the same.

Good for Paul. One oval race on "The Mile" isn't enough. The trick is finding ovals that aren't controlled by the France family.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again; Texas World Speedway.
Independently owned superspeedway - good enough? |

i hope they can get 3 ovals in, and there are a few abroad that have shown well. Lausitzring, even Rockingham can be good for a UK double header- Brands GP, and the laustiz, then imola, spa europe is done then go back to NorthAm...
wait we're talking strictly ovals to add, well ... |

I don't mind ovals as long as they are in Germany, Hungary, Bahrain, South Korea or Afghanistan, that is, somewhere that people don't already have 100,000 oval races to go to -- where they'd be a curiosity and an enticement that the people there had never seen before. You'd get your answer in the second year, remember, not the first, as to whether or not running ovals in those places was a good idea.
I don't think returning to Nazareth PA, for one example, where we couldn't draw flies despite the best efforts of local hero Mario Andretti, would be worth the effort. It'd be kind of like trying to reinact an Austin Powers movie with middle-aged participants who'd been there, for the entertainment of a much younger generation who hadn't. That is, it'd make the older folks happy and make the younger people wonder what on earth they were playing at. |

I'm really not sure this is a good idea. With the IRL looking at road races for 2005 and Champ Car having some more ovals we again have to series fighting for the same ground.
I'm still of the opinion Champ Car's best bet is to become a street and road-course series only. |
