Macau F3 Grand Prix news
I know the race is still some time away, but I thought it was worth starting a thread now as Macau is the biggest and best F3 race of the year, even though it is a lottery.
The first surprise news is that Bruno Senna has decided to return with Räikkönen Robertson Racing. Story here. It's quite a brave move on his part, I think, as he missed last year's race and had something of a crash fest there in 2004. Still, at least he knows the circuit well, having also raced there in 2003 in a Formula Renault. He was 2nd then, iirc, and I'm sure he's learnt a lot from a season in GP2. How great it would be if he were to win 25 years after his uncle. Autosport magazine is also suggesting that Sébastien Buemi might join him at Double R, since ASL Mücke Motorsport is one of the F3ES teams that doesn't normally go to Macau. A strong pairing, but I reckon they would still have to look out for Marko Asmer, who was a definite contender for victory last year, until he was blocked out at Lisboa by an ASM pair sharing an inability to judge the braking point, leaving him nowhere to go. See what I mean about a lottery? |

Even though the entry list isn't out, i'm guessing Rodolfo Avila will be racing, trying to finish the race for only the 2nd time in about 5 attempts!

Well, the only driver worth a mention there is Lou Meng- he won the Formula Renault Macau race in 2004- ahead of Senna and Scott Speed. But then raced in British F3 National class in 05, finishing way down the order.

Does anyone know if one time Euroboss debutant Jo Merszei is racing this year (or should that be cruising at the back?)

The entry list should be out any day now, but this week's Autosport reports that Double R will be taking Bruno Senna and Sebastien Buemi as well as this year's regulars, Stephen Jelley and Jonathan Kennard. I hope Bruno does well, but he really needs to re-familiarise himself with an F3 car, which may mean missing a GP2 test.
This leaves no room for Atte Mustonen, who is switching to the French Signature team on a one-off basis. This might not be such a bad thing. Atte needs to treat this as a learning year. Next year, when he will hopefully be back with Double R, will be his big chance. Fortec are thought to be taking Seb Hohenthal, whilst Hitech will have their regular pair of Marko Asmer and Walter Grubmüller. After his performance there last year, Marko should be one of the hot favourites, but Macau has a habit of not working out like that. Carlin will have four cars, including one local, but I don't know which of their regular drivers they are taking. You'd think Maro Engel and Sam Bird, but the two Brazilians, Moraes and Valerio are the ones with the money. |
