2003 125cc championship
With so many riders capable of racing at the front this year it is nigh on impossible to narrow them down into a list of less than 10 riders to put in a poll. As well as those listed Masao Azuma, Gabor Talmasci, Alex de Angelis, Gino Borsoi, Andrea Dovizioso, the KTM/Derbi/Gilera riders are all capable at running of the front. Dovizioso and de Angelis showed as much in South Africa. The others in theory at least.
It thus follows that the champion will end up being one of those not listed individually in the poll... That the list of potential winners is so long shows just how competitive the 125cc W/C continues to be. So unpredictable... (that is not the case with many more high profile motorsport championships). KTM are currently struggling but surely they will come good though probably too late for Vincent to have a chance of defending his title. Gilera/Derbi have so far disappointed - what is wrong there? Dovizioso is one of the surprises thus far - didn't expect anything there. Isn't he still with the team that ran (and struggled with) Mirko Giansanti last year? Good to see Mirko competitive again - surely one of the best 125cc riders of recent years never to win a race. Will he win one in 2003? IMO the 2003 title will come down to a straight fight between Daniel Pedrosa and Youichi Ui. Ui is back on top form and Pedrosa is ominously competitive. On the other hand... Heart says Lucio Cecchinello.
Head says Daniel Pedrosa or Steve Jenkner. Vincent will find the going tought for most of the year as the KTM develops. Gilera are nowhere without Poggiali. Youichi Ui is back on top form and as his confidence rebuilds, he could prove to be just as tough as 2001. |

3 races, 3 different winners (and Jenkner, yet to win a race, leads the championship). It is still no easier to pick a champion.

A few years back Giansanti was leading the champ without a win ... so does Jenkner ...but he won't stay there for long ... i would like to be Cechinello or De Angelis ... but neither keeps the bikes on the road for more than a few races ..

It would be nice, if it would be Kallio, but realistically speaking I wish the champ is Steve Jenkner.

Alzmora won the whole championship without a win a few years back. Jenkner could to the same.

I think Jenkner will win a race or more this season. It'll be like this - Jenkner will take a while to win one, but once the dam is broken, the wins will flood in for Jenkner.
I stick by the comments I said before, but now my heart AND head are saying Lucio Cecchinello. He's been consistent in the first three races and last year he really wasn't too bad concerning consistency. He did throw it off once or twice, but that's nowhere near as bad as early in his career! I think it would be great for him to win the title anyway. No rider deserves it more. He's been a stalwart of the category for years now and is now proving to be fast, reliable and he's a damn good bloke as well. |

I've been kinda boring and gone for Pedrosa, who looks the class of the field, and so impressive for such a young rider.
