New Engines in LMP1
Check out a very interesting article on DSC regarding the new Audi.
We already know about the NASAMAX Judd using alternative fuel and the Judd V10 diesal. Are there any more alterantive powered cars in the pipeline. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, alternative powered cars are the future for LM, particularly in the LMP classes. Were else is there a better test bed, and such freedom in the regs than LM for these new types of engines. Last edited by JAG; 23 Mar 2004 at 19:42. |

As for diesals at LM, can't wait myself. They will sound very different to our average road car, as every competition engine does. |

Oh great, somehow they would become even slower and less attractive.
Changing back to topic, I figure any diesel that would be able to run with the Audi, Judd or Elan engines would have to put out one heck of an interesting sound! Bring them on! Seriously, maybe that is what gets the manufactures off the fence and involved, and new challenge to justify developement costs. Bring them on! |

I think encouraging alternative fuel development is one good way that LeMans could attract more manufacturers back and especially to the prototype classes. So I am all for it.

Cosworth Racing is owned by the Ford Motor Company.
Cosworth Technology is owned by Audi. |

they must make an interesting sound and you would still get the off throtttle turbo gobble with a turbo even if its a diesel! but i cant help wondering that it wouldnt sound as good as say a petrol judd gv4 v10! anyway maybe in a few years we will be able to make our minds up for ourselves. it certainly would make the lmp1 class more competitive again! and alot more interesting! anyway heres a pic. of the Judd/Ricardo turbo diesel v10.

From the photo above, it would appear that the engine has a DOHC configuration. Any production diesels set up that way?

Is there a fuel efficiency benefit when a diesel is modified to run as a race engine? Will this help or hurt a diesel running over a 24 hour race?

Yes there is a fuel efficiency benefit - the amount in race conditions is yet to be proven - this is the trade off for a heavier base engine.
