There was a mass trade of old historic cars to Japan years ago, I think it was the Nissan cargo ships returning empty and offering very cheap rates as better tnan saling with no ballast. In the UK we lost hundreds of Cooper S's, Lotus Europa's (Type 47's) Elan's, Elite's etc. etc. so I would not mind betting a lot of them ended up there. I used to trade in cars in the uK during that period and they suddenly got very expensive.

ser, the ex Willment Jim Richards Escort TC has been owned by Raydon Smith here in NZ for many years. I've heard one or two accounts that this is not the Richards car, but many accounts say it is. The car looks very original, Smith choosing not to restore it, and he drives it very spritely in classic events. Its hard to beat the sound of that fantastic high pitched twin cam at top revs.
Also, the Halliday brothers Mk1 BDA which nearly won the NZ saloon car championship outright in 1974 is being restored in the South Island. This was the New Zealand Freighters car. Wickedly fast. It will no doubt appear at classic events when finished. |

it is very strange you you say about the "U" turn of cars to japan because about 3yrs ago a carrier berthed here, unloaded some 4wds from japan and returned with about 6 PRINCE SKYLINE GT/S of which had been sold here new in 1964/5

Some of the Escort stuff was covered in this Capri thread...
http://tentenths.com/forum/showthrea...threadid=43029 Although some of those old links now seem to be dead. As for cars going to Japan, I think you'll find a lot of Group B rally cars, Lancia Delta Integrale and Stratos have gone there too. |
