WEC 2023 Season - A new beginning!
Just setting up a dedicated thread for 2023 as more info starts to drop.
We know the calendar: We know we've got five manufacturers in Hypercar. Maybe a Glickenhaus. Maybe a Vanwall. We know the works Cadillac drivers. We know most of the UA drivers. It looks like we also now know there will be a works Corvette in GT-Am, with Ben Keating the designated bronze. https://www.dailysportscar.com/2022/...3-fia-wec.html |

I had seen that hinted at by some people, said they had seen him in the Vette trailer at Fuiji. Wonder if they sold him the car or he is renting it?

It appears 2023 may be the last season for LMP2 in the WEC.

Only chance I could see for P2 as maybe a final hurrah is some kind of NAEC style thing within WEC, at tracks where the capacity is able to hold them. Could dovetail nicely with ELMS if done right. Not a world title but a trophy of sorts.
So Sebring, Spa, Le Mans, Bahrain maybe. Might get 6-8 decent cars for that. Is that dumb? |

Wow this is kind of unexpected.

A very surprising development. The Lamborghini connection is there for '24 so is this just a polite way of parting ways with Ferrari? I don't really understand the thinking.

It doesn't make sense to pony up for new Ferraris and ditch them already after one year. Or maybe Ferrari didn't wanna sell IL new cars since they're 'defecting' to Lambo in '24.

But they wouldn't need to pony up for new Ferraris. They already have a fleet of 488s. The 296 is only eligible from '24 in ELMS/WEC.

Maybe they can't both go racing Ferrari's AND testing Lamborghini in 2023.
And the combination Porsche - Lamborghini is not a problem? |

Well, Lamborghini and Porsche are VAG/Porsche group brands.

Massive surprise to see the best Bronze driver Keating snapped up by Corvette…. If they don’t win the title then they’ll be very disappointed

I think that's much more he snapped up a Corvette to add to his collection of cars and they were willing to run for the price he's contributing

Quite interesting as a number of big name Ams have been re-classified back to their original gradings. I'm sure it will be controversial either way. Some drivers will be angry they didn't get the same treatment. From my side I think it's good to see young talents get a bit of protection as they try to establish themselves in sportscars. Parker Thompson being a good example. |

several of these reclassifications are the fia admitting they got the entire re-shuffle wrong, surely? although i can see maybe one example that’s entirely to do with the money they bring at their current grading.

I did not understand Parker at all, do well a GT3 Carrera championship and don't even get the chance to run in GTD at all, straight to Pro?? Same applied to van Berlo.
Gelael is quick but yeah Gold?? Pierson is quick but 16, Silver seems right and likely Gold by 24 |

Fairly large grid for the "rookie" test after Bahrain. A lot of the people can not be considered rookies to racing but I suppose testing new cars counts.

JOTA will remain on the P2 grid next year with a single car. That's good news as it was originally reported they'd just concentrate on the Porsche. |

Sounds like the sequence is as follows:
1+2 -> Penske IMSA (ready for Rolex) 3+4 -> Penske WEC (ready for Sebring) 5 -> JDC Miller IMSA (Sebring?) 6 -> Jota WEC (Sebring? Portimao?) 7+8 Proton IMSA + WEC (Long Beach? Portimao? Spa? LM??) |

Proton seemingly confirmed now but unclear on timings or drivers. Bruni and Tincknell mentioned. Is Ried wanting to be the third driver? Not really sure.
https://sportscar365.com/lemans/wec/...he-963-effort/ Missed this yesterday but there could be a second Prema in P2 next year. Looking like a very decent P2 field for its swansong https://www.autosport.com/wec/news/p...ocus/10397107/ |

I had a thought today that possibly the cars that have been testing aren't actually the ones Penske will be running. They could be simply test cars and maybe those will end up being the first round of customer cars. Or maybe they will just be kept for spares for Penske. |
