David1234 should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Who deserves to get to F1 - but probably won't?

Hi,

Who do you think deserves to get to F1 but probably won't due to budget, face not fitting, out of fashion, wrong place wrong time at a crucial point in their career. (Even drivers who may have done a few GP's)

Let's go for people who are still arguably old enough to re-kindle an F1 career.

Id say 90% of the drivers good enough to be decent enough F1 driver. Its been a while since a junior level driver could just flat out dominate the juniors and get promoted to F1. Id be willing to bet all of them this decade had something going for them. Money, connections, F1 development deal, whatever.

I like Sebastien Bourdais. He's done really good in Champ Cars

Kristiansen and Jorg Muller are very good examples, also Marc Hynes and Robbie Kerr, both of whom struggled for budgets (like so many good British drivers over the years).

I'd prefer to be Tom Kristensen with 7 Le Mans wins than Tom Kristensen ex midfield GP team driver.

Back to the point though i cant see many of the current junior stars making it to F1 and if they do having a successful career. More and more drivers seem to be looking outside of F1 and thats probably the best thing to do nowdays (Wilson, Jamie Green, Paffett etc) which seems to be the thing to do

Justin Wilson is a great driver but joining Jaguar may have ruined any F1 hopes that he may have had.

Danica Patrick?

Maybe if she wore an all-white suit?

Does Anthony Davidson count? Just when it seems like he's a shoe-in, he always seems to get beaten to it by someone who probably doesn't deserve a(nother) shot as much as he does!

Adam Carroll has always suffered from budget problems, and this may hamper his progression to F1.

I tend to agree with this, I get the feeling if he'd seen out the season with Minardi and continued to impress he'd have stood a much better chance getting a half decent seat the following year.

Bourdais should have been in an F1 seat this year, without a doubt.

Richard Lyons, Gary Paffett, Ralph Firman and Andrew Ranger all deserve their shot (or second go.)

I'd throw Ryan Briscoe in there. I'm afraid his move to the US could have been a fatal error in terms of a possible F1 career.

Toyota were happy with him - so much that they were prepared to tip him into a Jordan drive.

But he is struggling in an oval-based series with a weak engine.

You can see how good he is by the fact that everytime he gets on a road or street course he shows a lot of talented drivers the way.

Scott Dixon. Wasted on ovals, particularly with a dud engine this year.

Biased, of course

There are lots of drivers who are capable of driving in F1 but either won't be given the chance or won't look at it too seriously. Lots of people from Champ Car, IRL and Nascar would be plenty capable but won't get the chance or wouldn't push too hard for it. The only ones who might would be someone like AJ Allmendinger or Andrew Ranger, but it's too early to say for either one of them. The fact that Bourdais was turned away is a result of the same kind of F1 stupidity that lead to the situation at the USGP.

What about current F1 test drivers like PDLR? Someone like that might get to drive one more GP in their career, but they're really not going to have a career.

I'd throw James Courtney and Robbie Kerr in there as well - both very talented guys! Courtney was dudded by Jag.

He was the first person who sprang to mind when I saw the title of this thread. Okay, technically he's already been to F1, but he never really got a fair go; teams didn't want to adjust anything around the fact that he's so tall, and he didn't have enough races at Jaguar to really show how good he was. Bearing in mind that he trounced Mark Webber in F3000, he deserved a better shot.

I'd love to see Anthony Davidson get a drive as well, I'd like to see what he can do (when he occasionally gets to race he seems to have horribly bad luck) - it's a shame that BAR are keeping hold of him as test driver while Honda get their Japanese interest in the car. Maybe he'll get his chance if Button jumps ship next year.

I don't know if you watch Champ Car, but Wilson is doing a fantastic job this season. At the Portland he destroyed everyone, including a number of people who are undoubtably of F1 caliber.

I wouldn't say he trounced Webber - I mean they both won four races.
