Porshe to make a sedan?
http://www.autoweek.com/cat_content...._code=03226990
I've got no problem with this. A Porsche sedan! Who woulda thunk? Especially at a reasonable price? Here's my own concept (photo chop) of what it will look like: |

They claim their owners are growing up - it could be viewed as a fourth way to milk them - there have been rumours of a new four door for a while with a few aborted projects but it seems to be on again - reasonable price - I think not...Porsche means 911 and everything else is devaluing the marque - be it Boxsters cheapening it, Cayennes blanding and larding it or the boss saying that they make USD 50000 on every USD 125000 car (GT3)ie we rip you off

Hell I was dissapointed in BMW for releasing an SUV (they can call it what they want, it's an SUV). This trend is terribly dissapointing. If I want a 4 door that's fast with a boxer engine, I will just go buy a WRX thanks.

the porsche sedan idea is awful-will it look like Korr's example or would it be a V8 sedan with a 928 face and a big arse? |

On the '80s Pininfarina made a gorgeous 4 door saloon Ferrari concept car, named Pinin.

perhaps "gorgeous" is in the eye of the beholder.
i would say the new maseratti quattroporto is rahter nice, and i expect porsche to release nothing short of a stunner, maybe "4 door" will end up like the Mazda Rx-8? |

Ferrari have made LOADS of 4-doors before and even several estates. The Sultan of Brunei has several 456 "Shooting Breaks". http://www.pistonheads.com/features/gfos2001/15.jpg
BTW: christ, that Pinin is awful!! |

...and big hulking SUVs. Heard nothing but good things about the Cayenne.
I mean, look at the success stories from other four-door-supercar projects: Maserati Quattroporte, Aston Martin Lagonda, Lotus Carleton... no, hang on!! |

The pedant in me suggests that Ferrari never made any four doors or estates - the SUltan however did chuck humungous sums of money at Pininfarina.....

Re: the S of B - true, plus which Ferrari don't make any of their bodies, they outsource to a company in Modena (who's name escapes me) who do several manufacturers from the area (communist government in Emilia, clusters of resources, workshops and artisans wadda wadda) who would have built them to special order with some adjustments made by the chassis people at Ferrari. Rolls, Bently, Aston etc. offer a similar service (again the S of B has loads of obscure bespoke cars. Really is fascinating, if, in many cases, utterly tasteless!!).

You've heard that the Cayenne Turbo is quicker round the old Nurburgring than a Boxster S ... !

Natural progression.
If they do it, it'll surely be a competitor for the new Maser Quattroporte. Of course, you could argue that we may already be talking about 4 door Ferraris if they weren't in the same stable as Maserati these days... As with the Cayenne, if Porsche do make a sedan don't waste your money on an early series 1, wait a year or so for the series 2. Because it will be the best in its class - not even Porsche can achieve perfection at the first attempt, but they're usually pretty close at the second... |

Porsche have thought of this before. I can't remember exactly when, but it was code-named the 989. I believe money and lack of potential interest stopped them (probably just asked 911 overs and they never want anything but 911s).

I don't like the idea, Porsche makes racecars and sportscars. Not sedans and SUV's. I would rather have porsche at lemans with a GTP than having a Cayenne and a four door |

I think ultimately that's probably what Porsche would prefer, too. But most of all they want to stay independent and profitable, and I think expanding into other premium markets is the only way they see that being possible. The Cayenne may never beat Land Rover off-road, but the series 2 will be the best SUV you can buy. The Cayenne S isn't even that expensive - it's already killing the high end X5 in my area.
If Porsche do make a 4 door, it'll be competing with (and beating) the BMW M5, not the WRX STi or Evo. And I'm pretty sure I will want one. The Cayenne is a hit already, I think a sedan would be too. Then maybe Porsche will have the money to build a GTP to win Le Mans. That trophy's been out on loan for too long already, but I don't see Porsche returning until they can win it. |

I saw the SUV for the first time today. I wasn't that impressed. It is a lot cooler to take the kids to school in a 911 and make a couple of trips!
and garcon, you are right, the trophy has been on load for too long. |

I think Porsche should worry about improving their core business. More performance with less window dressing and plesentries.
