And the shortest list so far....
Vauxhall Nova 1 litre saloon (it was cheap, I was skint) Vauxhall Nova 1.4 hatchback Peugeot 306 D Turbo The first Nova provided a lot of bits for the second (it got smacked and got stripped for spares before getting binned). The Pug is the current set of wheels and has so far been an excellent car - I've had it 4 years now. |

Oh dear... the brain's going I think...
Let's see... 1970 Austin 1100 Mk2 BJD239H barely ran in my possession but as I'd bought it to take apart and try to put together again it did very well considering. I still have the bootlid and glass if anyone wants them. 1971 Volkswagen 1600TL Fastback I loved this car - evil handling in the snow with a big heavy VW bus engine hanging over the back wheels. But great fun. Survived being rammed by a Vauxhall Chevette, and being jumped on by a student vandal, but it eventually died on the back of an AA tow truck when hit by a VW Golf. 1973 Hillman Avenger 1500GL Say what you like - I like Hillman Avengers. And this was fine, reliable student transport until the uninsured git in the Vauxhall Viva smashed into me at a traffic light in Kinmel Bay, North Wales. 1973 Rover P6 3500S Magnificent car. I'd have another one in an instant. The manual listed the recommended tyre pressures for "sustained motoring in excess of 115mph"! Trouble was, V8 fuel consumption was doing no good at all to my student grant so it was sold on and replaced by 1974 Morris 1800 Mk3 The Landcrab, or better known as Icky Morris. Basically sound, it was mustard coloured and the previous owner had filled in the inevitable rust holes with glassfibre matting, didn't sand it smooth and instead brushpainted over the "repairs" with gold paint. Not a pretty car by any means. Sanded down, repainted and sold (with a dodgy sounding clutch) to buy... 1978 Chrysler Avenger 1.3LS What did I say about Avengers? Trouble was, Chrysler took the perfectly good Hillman design and put several new glitches into it. Best of all was the passenger door which took to flying open under heavy braking. Enough was enough so... 1978 Toyota Corolla 50 Liftback You don't see many of these. They look like a lengthened, narrowed Ford Mustang II with a hatchback. Very odd. Mine was left hand drive, which actually resulted in the classic situation where I was flagged down by the police whilst my passenger was "recovering" from a night in the pub and the policeman attempted to interview him about driving under the influence. 1975 Triumph Toledo Notorious, this one. I always thought it handled weird until I took it in for new tyres and was shown that the front left had been riding on a wheel from a Morris Marina. 1982 Renault 30 V6 By far the worst car I ever had. No redeeming features whatsoever... Next! 1969 Ford Zodiac Mk4 V6 Now this is more like it. Wouldn't steer, wouldn't stop, took an age to get to a decent speed and when it did was spectacularly unstable. I loved it. You had to concentrate for every moment that you were driving it. Would I have another? You bet! 1984 Austin Metro City X Never look a gift horse in the mouth? Alright, I won't. But it was a Metro, it was yellow, it had a misfire I just couldn't pin down and some thoughtful soul tried to write it off for me and did nothing more than put a huge gouge in the back corner. I sold it to my newsagent for his son's first car and I'm amazed he still speaks to me. 1982 Volvo 240 Everything they say about Volvos is true. As sturdy as a glacier, twice as heavy and half as fast. 1983 Ford Capri Mk3 2.0LS I bought it from a hairdresser and it gave surprisingly carefree service. The only thing being that when I mentioned to Bluebottle that I'd bought the last car he'd ever imagine me driving I seem to recall the response was "Oh no - he's driving a Capri!" 1981 Volkswagen Golf C Almost nothing to say about Alfie the Golf. He was entirely dependable if a little slow, but the very model of a handy hatchback around town. I needed something with a little more... er.... Mercedes Benz 220 W115 This car is my pride and joy - even though in the 14 years of my ownership she's been in storage for six of them! I doubt if I'll ever sell her, but the question is whether I'm going to get around to restoring her. 1984 Talbot Tagora 2.2GLS This car was big, cheap, unreliable and a lot more entertaining than you might imagine. The guy who bought it from me was going to take it banger racing, and I'm almost sorry about that. Almost. 1998 Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 Starbug the Corsa was a little less reliable than a new car had a right to be. The central locking packed up at three months, a cold start problem manifested at five. Besides, a city car wasn't really what I needed, so... 1995 Rover 216GSi My current car and I adore it. But watch this space! |

sorry but the shortest list goes to me now - I've only ever owned one car - soon to be 2 (see current fiesta thread).
I probs have the british record for taking the longest time to buy a car after passing a driving test - 5 & half yrs! Mainly due to still being at school when I passed so had no money; couldn't decide what car to get; whether to buy 2nd hand/brand new/PCP and to actually commiting myself to repaying a loan etc. |

i'm gonna cheat, and count the company cars i've driven while i was at home with the parents cause i don't actually own any of the cars i've driven
1988 or so bmw 316i (lhd) h reg bmw 520i estate j reg bmw 735i automatic p reg vw caravelle tdi p reg bmw m3 evo convertible d reg suzuki sj413 jeep thing p reg vw golf vr6 out of the above, my current car the vw golf is my favourite, closely followed by the 520i estate. that was a superb car just to hang around in, mainly cause the back seats made camping a comfortable affair. loved the sunroof though, it either opened at the back (ideal for lairy back seat passengers to stick their heads out of) or at the front (perfect to rest your hand on whilst driving). engine was poop, but it still did 120mph. |

74 Alfa Romeo 2000 GTV (105 series)
78 Ford Cortina 3.3 litre 6 cyl (don't laugh, it was my student car and it manfully suffered all manner of abuse) 78 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000 (116 series) 88 Alfa Romeo 33 1.7IE 88 Alfa Romeo 75 Twin Spark 95 Subaru Liberty Rallye 98 Subaru Impreza Wagon 99 Subaru Outback 00 Ford Falcon Ute That lot is spread over 13 years. Currently have the first one and the last two. Hard to believe only three marques in that list - the Fords are anomolies though |

1980 Toyota Corolla station wagon was my 1st.
That wasn't the car to have in high school so my parents bought me a 1988 Ford Mustang LX 5.0 with 5 speed. I kept that for 10 years then bought a 1998 Audi A4 1.8 Quattro. That's worked well and I'm quite happy with it. I've always wanted a Red Porsche 944. Hopefully if I can buy a house with a garage in the next few years, I'll buy one. I like the monaro, so when the pontiac gto lands over here, I might buy a used one in a few years. I'll scrape the pontiac badges off and get some proper holden and monaro badges from oz. |
