Fuji 1977 Podium Ceremony.
Nigel Roebuck discusses the Ferrari slapped wrist in the latest Autosprout. He uses a story about the Japanes GP 1977 to illustrate his point.
Bith the winner (Reutemann) and second placed driver (Hunt) had left for the airport. This left a yellow suited mechanic and Patrick Depallier (3rd) to celebrate. In the photograph the mechanic is wearing a black armband and I wondered if anybody could identify the reason why. Also if you've seen the picture you'll see that Depallier looks like he's wearing his pyjamas!!!! |

Yeah, I saw that too!
I thought it was quite amusing, the guy looks really happy, I guess overalls back then were pretty flimsy looking things. |

You're right, Ghinzani, that's probably what the armband's there for. Villeneuve thumped into the back of Peterson's Tyrrell and hit some spectators and a marshall, I believe.
I think the cheery fellow in yellow is the Magnetti Marelli engineer. He always seemed to be in the thick of things in the Ferrari pits and Fuji wasn't his only appearance on the winner's rostrum. There's a great picture of him in the 1971 Autocourse helping Andretti win the South African GP. |

On lap 6 Gillles ran into the back of Ronnie's Tyrrell under breaking for the 1st right hander at the end of the front straight. Gilles landed nose first and cartwhelled into a photographers area...killing 2 and seriously injured 7 others...there are 4 photos of this incident in the 1977 AUTOCOURSE.
James Hunt's rational for standing up the fans was that the Japanese organizers had not provided his requested police escort to the airport so therefor he hadn't the time to stay and collect his trophy!!! ingo is correct..it was the Marelli Magneti trade represenative up on the podium. take care, all Murph |
