Vale Dorothy Smith "The Grandmother of NZ Motorsport"
It is with much sadness and shock that I learnt this morning of the passing of Dorothy Smith, who collapsed at Manfeild Park on Friday and never recovered after being rushed to hospital.
Dorothy Smith is the 92 year-old mother of veteran Kiwi driver, Kenny Smith. Dorothy holds a record that may never be broken: She has attended every motorsport meeting in Kenny's 51-year racing career. Interviewed on TV for a primetime current affairs show, Dorothy says she quite often stays in the pit garage while racing is on and that she still gets nervous even today. She couldn't even remember the last time that she missed a race meeting. She has always tried to support Kenny and let him race whatever he wants. Motorsport has lost a true lady and may Dorothy Smith always long be remembered as The Grandmother of New Zealand Motorsport. |

Yes, it was definitely very sad news yesterday at the track - there was a minutes silence before the first TRS race as a mark of respect to Dorothy.
RIP and condolences to the Smith family and friends. |

RIP Dorothy
Had the pleasure of chatting with her many times with my Nana and it was always good to see her in the pits. |

Amazing to think as well under the circumstances that he finished in a more than credible 7th , he set the 2nd fastest lap time of the GP, shows hes still on the money at 67!

Dorothy held legendary status in NZ motorsport being not only the mother of one of NZ's most fiercely successful race car driver's but also the adopted mother / grandmother to virtually every other racer who has competed there in over 5 decades - she was special.
RIP Dorothy, enjoy your reunion with Morrie. To Ken, Pat, Maureen, Karen, Michelle, Johnny & all of the Smith clan our most sincere condolences and thanks for allowing us to share the good times with such a wonderful lady, she will be sadly missed. |
