2 part races
As I was watching the Zandvoort DTM round, after Dumbrecks crash, a "new race" began for the final ten laps. Is there a particular reason European races have this practice instead of just continuing on from the previous lap completed before the accident?

It happens in F1 too.
It's to avoid the confusion of running on aggregate times. Of course anyone who retired from part one can't restart. |

It's happened in the BTCC at least once - Croft 98/99 ish as I recall.
From memory if the race has completed 3/4 distance then the result is declared. Any less and it's re-run as if the first part never happened. For the spectators, and propably drivers and teams, it's far less confusing than an agregate result. Unless you've got a timing screen in front of you it's difficult to tell who is in which position. |

Confirm redshoes assessment.
The grid for the second part (or 3rd or...) is set based on positions one lap before the red flag. For races under Nat B or clubmans permit it's 1/2 distance and the result is declared. Don't know why as I would have thought that the drivers at the cheaper end could less afford paying for only half a race. Some regs at clubs/series are giving options to restart after 1/2 // 3/4 if time permits at CoC discretion. I believe Pickups regs stated 90%. |

Just to add confusion: There was a race last year where the first two passed the chequered at the end of the race, then touched, and winner hit the barriers.
Red flag came out and the result was taken back one lap and winner excluded as he wasn't running at time of red flag. Don't know how it was resolved. |

toca shootout 93 had a 2 part race as wel after mansells accident, the way i see it if cars can run then they should be allowed back into the race le mans style,
croft race was yr 2000 round 14 "This race result is the result of a full race restart, due a very long stoppage whilst Vincent Radermakers's car was recovered back to the pits after a big accident" |
