My friend that used to work for Broadspeed tells me that the colour of the car that won the 1966 championship was Rolls Royce Regal Red (non metallic) with Ford Silver Fox metallic roof. The 'Ford' sidewinders were made of fablon in Ford Ermine White. Some of the first Anglias had a different shade which were Ford Imperial Maroon with Ford Ermine White roof. The Fitzpatrick/Taylor car was Ford Ermine White with Vanician Gold metallic roof and flash - there is no mention if this is a Ford colour. The sidewinders were in black fablon. He says that most of the cars came from Ford in white or maroon and some came as shells only. He goes on to say that 'Taylor blew the flywheel of the white car and she almost s*** herself as it went off like a hand-grenade ( a bit of over lightening by Broad on the flywheel but few knew!). I'm pretty certain it was not Roll's Regal Red,I always thought it was a bit on the red side, perhaps the Jag colour would be closer?

Just two pics to compere the silver fox of one of my cars and my mates scooter in the jaguar colours. The Fox is not as Silver as you would imagine it had a bluish tinge but not as dark as the Blue Mink Ford colour. The Jag Quartz Blue was very light and transluscent. I mainly stood at Druids but with a 20 lap race i walked around.I remember once standing at the top of Paddock Bend just below the level of the straight and Anita Taylor in then the maroon Anglia rolled it right in front of us, it was on it`s roof right in the middle of the track, it was the first lap so you can imagine how hectic it was. It may of been in Sep 1968 the same meeting when Ken Costello got clipped by a Ford Falcon on the top straight but managed to get the Cooper S on the infield right at the top of Paddock Bend opposite the marshalls post. I was standing at the same place for both of these incidents. Last edited by Keith Graham; 28 Dec 2007 at 11:35. Reason: pics not ther so i tried again |

I think it was Rolls Royce Regal Red.
I went into it at the time,; was going to do a helmet that colour. And I delivered some RR's in that colour. Jaguar had a Regency Red which was similar at the time (XJ6 launch). Last edited by gfm; 28 Dec 2007 at 11:52. |

You are correct Graham, the latter colour for obvious reasons would be wrong. The infamous Siver Fox and Blue mink ?,they cost Ford a lot of money in warrenty claims!

Unfortunately my Cortina Lotus had the dreaded peeling of the Silver Fox, eventually I did a bear metal respray. My Father was lucky with his Blue Mink Escort in 1968, it was a brand new export model with the quarter light windows still in the doors as the new escort had the full up and down side windows. His paint was excellent. All the good stuff must sadly go abroad!!

Corrected first name, sorry about that. Strangely enough the Escort Blue Mink was not a problem,I remember there were a few Silver Fox cars that still suffered, the primer was incompatible with the top coat apparently. |

My Ford Anglia from 1963, BXK 919 was that plain Blue with white flash and roof, bumpers removed, lowered, 5 1/2 J s, with side exit exhaust (TR4A rear silencer only) which we did Firle hillclimb in.
Little beauty but modelled more on the Peacock 1650s seen at Brands regularly winning in 66 67. |

Regal red!
Colour was always described as Rolls Royce Regal Red back at the time - I owned a Broadspeed car back in late seventies (together with a number of other well known Anglias) but by then was white and in full club spec with bubble arches and perspex windows - The IRS was a tidy piece of kit and it still had the original bag tank and five speed box.

Almost bought the superspeed car that Glen Maskell purchased - a club spec car that never ran in the British Touring Car championship but an original one owner superspeed race car at the time - turned it down coz it had cut away wheel arches...

When I left Ford of Europe at Warley, one of the spare GP II ETCC Broadpseed Anglias was still on its dais in reception in 1968.
This had been used mainly as a show car at Ford sales promotions, although it was a fully built and functioning race car. This car was a full team car. One of my chums purchased it in circa 1970 and my automotive biz was deeply involved in its restoration. The paint was Rolls Royce Regal Red Metallic for the main body: and the roof was from memory Silver Fox. The paint was supplied by ICI Belco (Nitro-Cellulose) and luckily, we were given a number of gallons! My chum, the owner, Francis Beechey, who was then working as a sort of liaison between FAV, Boreham and Warley, managed to con the paint from ICI gratis! I believe we finished up with 17 coats: thin and translucent doesn't describe it! The cars were based on the 1200 c.c. Super Anglia, with all the extra bits of trim intact. The engine was a modified SCA SOHC FII: the rear suspension was independant with towers welded into the rear where the passenger seat would have fitted. It was, frankly, a pig of a job! That said, it stopped the paddock at Lydden when the cover came off in its first post-rebuild outing, as the final (three stage hand rubbed) finish was awesome. |
