Broadspeed Mk2 Cortina

Hi Chaps, one for the older beggars on here, Did the Broadspeed concern Ever race a Mk2 Cortina, or for that matter ever make a Road going version either, I dont think they did but I would love to be proved wrong.

I remember the Broadspeed escorts being the things to catch. They did an earlier Anglia, but I think the Escort was the ultimate.

the MK2 was only raced briefly, I think largely as a test bed for the incoming escort, The AM car had a Cosworth FVA fitted I think, it really was a hot car with radically modified suspension, wide rims and slicks

the homologation papers are far more standard, as per the MK1 really

The MK II Cortina was not very successful. It had considerably larger front aspect and thus aerodynamic resistance: and was far heavier. Body mainly.

When Ford tried to develop the first MK II Lotus it was far too slow and sluggish.

As a stopgap a Lotus Anglia was built but this sort of frightened everyone who tried it!


It was decided it would be far too dangerous for retail customers.

Eventually the MK II Lotus engine was beefed up to provide quite a bit more grunt. (SImilar I seem to recall as the S2 Elan).

We had one on the "The Firm", a Black Badge (very rare; built to commemorate Jim Clark's sad death).

Unfortunately, it was stolen and never recovered.

Ralph Broad's main Ford focus was first, of course, the RAC Touring Championship winning Anglia Super in Group 2 (I think??).

These were fully trimmed as a 107E, but with radically modified grunty bits: Coil spring rear suspenders with radius arms etc.

Lump was a single cam FII SCA based thing, with downdraft IVAs and slide throttle.

Did quite a bit of work on one of these too, as a mate whom I previously worked with at Ford, and had moved over to Comps, bought the dealer show car which for years had sat in the European HQ at Warley reception!

Broad then of course moved on to the BDA Escort, in which John Fitzpatrick invariably did his giant killing act, blowing off such things as Yogi Muir's Wiggen's Teap 7 litre Camaro!

Cannot ever remember any Broadspeed MK II Cortinas though??

Is this a Lotus works car???, UVX 565E, Certainly driven by a John Surtees at brands in 67,
I think the Alan Mann cars were CTC 24E and 25E, I seem to remember another White Lotus withan Orange roof doing the rounds as well, but I can find no history about this one.

For reference, Ian, Broadspeed "Works" colour scheme was Rolls Royce Regal Red (Metallic: and a pig it was to spray, too, as it was virtuslly translucent!) with a silver roof.

I'm pretty sure that no Broadspeed Mk 2s were ever raced as it realy came out at the "wrong time" I remember "giving" a MK 2 Lotus Cortina to George Polley for nothing, so he could use the engine in an Escort rally car in the early 70s . Hindsight aaaaaaarg !

Having done a lot of Roller work in the past,I always liked that colour for painting.The best ever red in my opinion.
I also restored one of the Lotus Works Team cars,Ex Graham Hill.My Ex-boss bought it from G Marshall esq,nicely brush painted in maroon with a yellow flash!!!.Not sure where that car is now,the reg no was CTC 24E[ I think]

When we rebuilt and updated the 107E Broadspeed car, my mate and customer sourced the paint (Cellulose) from ICI Belco: which I never actually liked.

I can remember that it had something like 12 coats of paint, before the last "P" coat of paint and lacquer!

Then hand rubbed in Farecla and finally Bluebell: and finally a coat of Simoniz hard wax!

"An' you tell t'young 'uns today and they don't believe you! They don't bloody believe you!"

Did look gorgeous! Stopped the paddock at Lyydon, first time out.

I think 24 and 25 still both exist, one, 24 I think has led a full life and was running a V6 for a while but has now been restored with a BDG engine

UVX566E was carried by a works rally Mk2, Roger Clark's '67 Scottish Rally winner, so '565' would be pretty likely to have some connection with Ford....

Its a replica I made for a customer in Paris 15 years ago . It had coil spring rear suspension and rear disc brakes, Cosworth engine 5 speed straight cut gearbox LSD he did buy it the very best of mechanical parts .The colour on the celluloid film of the time is not faithful it was much darker deeper maroon than it looks in these pictures

Perhaps straying a little from the original Broadspeed question, I do know that the 1967 works Team Lotus cars were CTC 14E & CTC 24E. It is quite likely of course that either or both were passed on to Alan Mann. I also have an uncaptioned picture of what appears to be CTC 23E autocrossing or rallycrossing - it's well off the ground although neither crash helmet nor seat belts appear to be in evidence! It would suggest that a whole batch of 'CTC'-registered cars were destined for motorsport careers.

I also have a photocopy of a magazine article (don't know which mag) detailing the work Lotus did to convert a Mk2 Cortina into a Group V car in 1966/67. The article concludes by saying that if you wanted one for the road it would set you back £5,000; doesn't sound a lot until you realise that the standard car was listed at £1,068. Apparently the Cosworth FVA accounted for £2,500......

UVX 565E was Boreham built and used a radical rear suspension set up that was different to the Team Lotus cars. This car featured in one of the Dec 1967 editions of Motor. A number of famous drivers raced it. It was sold to Holland. See chassis archive.

CTC 14E and CTC 24E were originally Team Lotus cars. 14E was sold to that chap oop North - forgotten his name and raced in the same colours. 24E was passed to Alan Mann. He now has it back. All details already set out in chassis archive.

Wondering if you're asking the question because of that horrible bright green Mk 2 Lotus Cortina that's popped up on ebay several times claimed as a Broadspeed car??

Cortina Lotus Workscar CTC 14E

Have had the rare oportunity to aquare CTC 14E the ex Graham Hill Works Cortina Lotus car.
It restored now and will be testdriven next weeks to get it ready on to be on thr track for historic saloncar racing. It has the original FVA engine in it that was overholed some time ago and runs beatifully. I am surer it needs some more work to be competitive but i think it should stray as original as possible
