Colin Bond

Watching Seriously 10 recently I have become increasingly annoyed with there apparent lack of knowlage on the exploits of one of the Greatest Ever Drives Colin Bond. It seems they just seem to think that he is only the Avesco driving standards advisor. This bloke posses more talent in his little finger than most of the current so called Heros of racing have. He is still and will probably will be the only driver to win the ARC, ATCC and Bathurst. Maybe Ten should realise that there was talented drivers before 1997.

As if there was any racing in Australia before 1997, what are you thinking !!!!!!!!

To win the ARC and ATCC is a very big deal, imagine one of the modern V8 boys doing that there is no chance

He may have been a good driver, but his people skills left a lot to be desired, as when my daughter asked for his autograph he relunctally signed her autograph book..He was not busy at the time either.

So my impression of him has not changed over the years.

nyeh, cant say i ever followed him (i wasnt alive...) but my first impression of him backing up stupid penalties like that at canberra didnt give him a respect boost in my books. i might be a bit spiteful as a lowndes fan but it was pathetic

You must have caught him on a bad day. My experience was completely the opposite. One day after an ATCC race at Oran Park he came into the Caltex hospitality tent were my wife and I were. He made a very good impression - very friendly, personable and really seemed glad for a chance to hang out with the fans. He could have just been doing it for Caltex, but I doubt it. Besides all that, his driving record really speaks for itself.

Ditto Emfa, I often say hello to him in the pit paddock and is always pleasant. Also my father did an ad with him back in the late seventies and has nothing but nice things about him.

It's an awful long time since he was a top driver but there were times he was just unbeatable. Look back at the times he won the 100 lap races at Oran Park from the back of the grid after being out rallying all night for instance.
He was a lame duck from about 1974 though only good enough to beat Moffat.

I first meet him when I was at High School and he was at a shop just up the street from where I used to live in Drummoyne. I stopped him coming out of the shop and told him I was a big fan of his. Bondy then stood there talking to me for the next 20 minutes. I was just a 14 year old kid and he made a huge impression on me as I was fasinated with Motor Racing at the time. He could have just walked off but he stood there talking to me and from that day forth I think I have been one of his biggest fans. Bondy though does seem to me when it is one on one as a bit shy. But still one of the Few TRUE LEGENDS in Australian Motor Sport.

Didn't he build/run those Hyundai Lantras? I wonder what if Hyundai or Bond decided to stick with the Lantrsa and develop them? The Lantra didn't look that bad?

ARRGGGGGHHHHH with the Hyundais!!!

When they were built, they were never developed properly, although, back then they would have been somewhere near the ballpark. However, when the Hyundai $$ soon stopped, and the cars moved onto private hands, nothing ever went forward with them. They would have to be the Super Tourer with the least amount of carbon fibre used in them...

No it wasn't Bondy who decided to build them but Steve Hardman who worked for Hyundai at the time as a senior exec in marketing

I think Bond raced it at the 1994 Wellington Asia-Pacific Touring Car round, possibly at Pukekohe a week later, but i don't think he drove it after that.

Remember when Richards was due to drive the second Hyundai in 1995, he did the friday practice session at Winton, then parked it and didn't get back in it again.

As for Bondy, he was fairly competitive right up until he called it quits, winning two ATCC rounds in 1990, did a great job at Symmons in 1992 from the back of the grid. It's a pity more drivers these days don't combine rallying with racing.

I dont thing the vast majority of curcuit drivers would be able to do rallying. Only a few have ever really shone guys like The Laughing Cavalier, George Fury, Harry Firth and Brock

There were a number of Bond threads. I've bumped this because I was watching Grandstand before (ABC24) and Will Hagon was on it. He mentioned that Bond was told by Rauno Aaltonen that Bond could easily have gone to Europe and have been competitive over there. This blew my mind and gave some perspective of the level his driving was at. I knew he was a legend, I knew years ago he was one of the guns (years before I started getting into motorsport), But when I started following motorsport (fully in the early 90s), he wasn't remarkable to me. But Will 's comment made me go "Whoa!" I've never heard of similar being expressed about any other local legend. Can anyone expand on this?

I have always thought of Colin Bond as an Aussie version of Jim Richards, someone who in their younger days could compete with the best in the world in both rallying and racing

Bond was more than familiar with Ari Vatanen and David Richards as well during his time with the Mark 2 Escorts, and I believe Ari said similar things. Bond was certainly more than good enough to have cut it OS.

My olds have memories of him running at the Mountainview Hillclimb in a Torana.... from the little I've read about him over the years, he's been a remarkably proficient golfer, yachtsman and was a handy soccer player in his youth too. I think that the public perception of his speed was fairly proportional to how seriously he may have or have not been taking it all. I don't think he ever (at least during my time watching him) took it all as seriously as many of the others.
