2014 Indianapolis 500 entry list

Here's the confirmed entries to the 2014 Indianapolis 500:

o- Ganassi: Scott Dixon, Tony Kanaan, Ryan Briscoe, Charlie Kimball.
o- Penske: Hélio Castroneves, Will Power, Juan Pablo Montoya.
o- Andretti: Ryan Hunter-Reay, Marco Andretti, James Hinchcliffe, Carlos Muñoz, Kurt Busch.
o- Schmidt: Simon Pagenaud, Mikhail Aleshin, Jacques Villeneuve.
o- Rahal: Graham Rahal, Oriol Serviá.
o- Dale Coyne: Justin Wilson, 2nd TBA.
o- Foyt: Takuma Sato, Martin Plowman.
o- KV: Sébastien Bourdais, Sebastián Saavedra.
o- Carpenter: Ed Carpenter
o- Fisher: Josef Newgarden.
o- Herta: TBA.

That's 26 entries, comprising 16 Hondas and 10 Chevrolets.

Curt Cavin then reports that Dale Coyne may have a third car and Fisher a second, so Honda might reach 18 entries.

About Chevys, there's the Panther issue. Then there's Buddy Lazier expected to be confirmed, KV is likely to run a third car, and possibly a fifth Ganassi, a second Carpenter, a DRR and a Dragon.

That's a total 35 possible entries.

DRR will run in association with another team (which one?), or so it was reported last year. I would not bet on a 5th Ganassi and neither on a 2nd Carpenter or a 3rd Coyne.

Is Panther really going to miss this race when even Dragon are going to be there?

Dixon, Montoya, Kanaan, Castroneves, Villeneuve, Lazier, Rice all former winners of the 500... Only Sam Hornish, of all the drivers who were winners, and are still active, is missing. de Ferran, Frabchitti, and sadly Wheldon, are the other three we are missing.
Plus we have two nother series champions in Hunter-Reay and Bourdais.

Hornish is also the only active former series champion (still racing in any category) not present. So the field does have some depth to it.

With Villeneuve at Schmidt and Tagliani at Fisher, the battle of the Canadian one offs at this year's Indy 500 will be a good one to watch.

All we need now is Paul Tracy in some car or other.

Yeah yeah, I know.

Seriously though, I have no idea how quick (or not) JV will be, but Tagliani might make some noise. He was darn quick at the last race last year in that one-off. That was a Ganassi car though, not a Fisher one, which might make a difference.

Thanks for the reply. Well, Tagliani was once a pole-sitter at Indy while with the FAZZT/Schmidt Motorsports team and clearly knows how to get in the field at the 500. He also knows how to set up a car, and Fisher is a team that has most of its best moments on the ovals. I'd say the team made a good choice there.

As far as Villeneuve is concerned, this is the car in which Katherine Legge was moving up the order rather quickly whilst coming from the back of the grid last year, in spite of only having been a Bump Day-Carb Day-Race Day effort. With Villeneuve, this looks like it's a full "month" program, not a short one like last year. Schmidt is a good team that can win races and Villeneuve is a proven quantity at Indy. Yet, he has been out of these cars for a very long time. His situation is somewhat similar to that of John Andretti when he came back to the Indy 500 for a few years in the late 00s after sitting out most of the 90s and 00s while he was in NASCAR. Thus, I'd say Villeneuve realisticly would have to be content with a performance somewhat like or a little less than John's:
something like finishing as the first car not on the lead lap. A finish on the lead lap by Jacques would be awesome, though.

And just noted in the other thread, Paul Tracy might be in a car at Indy. Seems a bit nebulous at the moment though.

Agree with all that.

Is Andre Azzi/FAZZT involved with Schmidt? I know Tags ran that FAZZT Hot Wheels car in Toronto a few years back, but I don't know anything about whether that connection still exists.

Hi

I am planning to follow Indy Car for the first time this season.

I have followed many other motorsports but never gotten round to Indy Car other than one off races.

I am excited to see so many drivers I have followed in F1 racing this year.

So I will be tuning in.

We're slowly getting there, with not a lot of filler either, IMO. Are you putting no faith in the Paul Tracy discussions? I am pretty sure Jourdain is done.

Good to see Hildebrand is back, and in a better ride than before even: the Vision/Walker partnership that turned into Ed Carpenter Racing is a race winning team after all.

To be honest, I wasn't sure the #21 car would ever materialize, so I'm actually surprisEd that it now does. And it surprisEd me, too, that the driver of it is not Buddy Rice.

Good speed and good luck for all involved. Here's hoping JR can do well in this ride and maybe even add a few races during the season.

I'm very happy with the progress of full-time and Indy 500 entry lists. We still need 2-3 more, but it seems we are getting closer.

Adrián Fernández tweeted today that there are rumors that Bobby Rahal may race this year's Indy 500, thus implying it was also not so late for him to go back to racing...

Nevermind, he tweeted: "@BobRahal am I hearing right that you will attempt to qualify for the 98th running of the Indy500? If that is correct should I try the same"

But it was April Fool's day...
