6 Hours of Fuji
This race snuck up on me after the conclusion of the Tudor IMSA championship, but we get to see the WEC back in action at Japan this coming weekend. Hopefully this race gets off better than it did last year. The LMP1 battle should be tight as ever, will Toyota be able to win their home race?

There is another typhoon set to hit Japan but it may not affect Fuji.

Hard to imagine a typhoon hitting a country the size of California and not effecting the entire country...fingers crossed. Will be watching trackside at the scca runoffs at laguna seca..

I'm afraid that the typhoon Vongfong could cause several problems.

If it follows the same path as Phanfone, it will skirt the south eastern edges of Japan. It will depend on its speed as well. If it moves slowly, it wont affect the race.

The lack of any decent support package is illustrative for the status that WEC attributes itself...

In terms of support package for Fuji, I think it would of been good to have an Asian le mans series race on the Saturday (like what happens at Silverstone with the ELMS and WEC ) to build support for the regional series

AsLMS wants to stand on its own, not as a support series. So even though that suggestion is logical, its not probable. With Toyota in the series, and owning Fuji, they get a massive boost. Next year will be even bigger with Nissan.

Whatever the weather, TMG really need to put a win together in Toyota-Land!

Clearly more important to give VIPs 2-3 hours of 'hot laps' over the weekend. Real crowd pleasing stuff, I imagine.

WEC thinks having just it's race makes for a great event - it needs so much more than that. This isn't the first time there's hardly any support program, see the event schedule at Spa for the last couple of years for instance.
AsLMS, Super GT, Asian GT, Audi R8 cup, Formula Nippon and lots of other Japanese and SE Asian racing series could have joined. This way, the races will never evolve into bigger events but will stay merely what they are: just another race in the championship. Shanghai, Bahrain and Interlagos will probably be more of the same. |

It's basically the same support package format as F1 uses for their Asian and some other flyaway events, ie some no-one-cares 30 minute race for local Porsche Cup or lower formulae series set as far apart from the world championship sessions as possible. Another vital ingredient of standardizing everything...

Exactly, its a win win situation for both championships making an event of it as even WEC as a brand is new and so any way they can improve it and attract a wider audience should be encouraged

Those series' have a set schedule already. Super GT wont run with them, they do Fuji twice a year and its now just finishing up Thailand. People should stop acting like the wec doesnt want supporting acts. Just because theyre no raceing at Fuji with the wec doesnt mean it has no importance. Shanghai had support races, did that make it a classic? Always something to complain about I guess

Support races don't make an event but they help.
And as for WEC generally, if anyone said 6 years ago that there would be a world championship for sports cars with factory P1 teams from 3 makes and one to arrive next year and a strong GT field no one would believe you so I'm amazed by the progress in that time and I think the ACO don't get enough credit for it. It's just that the series has so much potential that it would be great if it was realised |
