Jesper OH should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
1988 Australian Group A Touring Car Racing - Discussion & Results

A thread about the 1988 Group A scene in Australia: Peter Brock joining the BMW camp was the big news, while new Nissan and Holdens failed to deliver in a season when everything was about the Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth. Dick Johnson had a seasons advantage over everybody else in that department, except for Andrew Miedecke, who never had the finances to deliver on a promising '87 season. One other big story hit the news later in the year, when the FIA announced that Group A would be dead internationally in the future. With Australian teams having invested heavily in the catagory in recent years, this was a hard blow. Over to you for some more news in due course.

Amaroo Park should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Colin bond was in the championship hunt right until the death. Bondy leased a Sierra from John Giddings rather than build one for the championship, this enabled him to have a well sorted car and engine that was close to if not right on the pace and had him up the front of the grid again after years of pedalling the arse off Alfa's

Bondy had by far the best reliability of all the Sierras throughout the ATCC, only retiring from two races (including the AMSCAR Series). Unfortunately one of those came at Amaroo, where he outpaced Johnson to take pole, and Johnson didn't have the excuse of changeable weather or his own timing showing he did a faster lap.

The team seemed to lose their way after this, struggling with engine reliability. When did they start running Motec engine management? Was it from the beginning? It was great to see their resurgence in 1990, capped by Bondy's two wins at Lakeside and Mallala.

6/3/1988 - ATCC1 - Calder Park, Vic

1988 Shell Ultra Australian Touring Car Championship
Round 1 - Calder Park, VIC (6/3/1988)

Circuit Length: 2.40 km
Race Distance: 60 laps
Weather: Sunny

A new-look to the ATCC, as Sierras flood the outright class. No factory Nissans - still building their new R31s - nor was the new TWR-developed Commodore ready. Also gone are the factory JPS BMWs, now painted white and run by Peter Brock. Frank Gardner and Tony Longhurst put together a Sierra team with the tobacco money, now displaying Amatil's Freeport brand; the car was only just finished in time for the race weekend. Bond had ditched the Alfa Romeo 75, and was now leasing the former #34 OXO car while his own was built. Miedecke was joined by Andrew Bagnall in a new car, while Gregg Hansford finds out John Bowe has replaced him at Dick Johnson Racing from a newspaper.

The Shell Sierra steamroller begins! The two red cars lock-out the front row, with Miedecke a distant third. The Commodores and BMWs are nowhere near the pace. Tony Mulvihill's time is disallowed after the car weighs in under the legal limit.

Johnson leads flag to flag to take a comfortable win, leaving the field in his wake. Bowe makes a bad start from the front row, charging back into the top five before low oil pressure forces his retirement. Biggest controversy is over the Mobil BMWs of Brock and Richards, the dispute focussed on homologation changes to the inlet manifold. The cars run under appeal - with the agreement of all entrants - in 1987-spec. They finish inside the top 6 on the road, but are later excluded.

13/3/1988 - ATCC2 - Symmons Plains, TAS

1988 Shell Ultra Australian Touring Car Championship
Round 2 - Symmons Plains, TAS (13/3/1988)

Circuit Length: 2.41 km
Race Distance: 58 laps
Weather: Sunny

Entry is effectively the same as at Calder, except Jim Richards skips this race for family reasons and is replaced by David Parsons. The BMWs are now legal to 1988-spec. Miedecke is quickest in the first qualifying session, before Johnson bolts on a set of qualifiers to dip into the 56-second bracket. First non-Sierra is Perkins in fifth.

Bowe makes another bad start, while Johnson again disappears into the distance. Perkins' race ends when his diff breaks exiting the hairpin on lap 1. Longhurst and Miedecke battle for second, before Bowe charges past the pair to be second by lap 20. Longhurst drops back with brake woes, while Miedecke stops for tyres and drops a lap, before contact with a lapped Tony Hunter puts both out. Johnson slows to allow Bowe to close up for a form finish, the first of many for the season.

27/3/1988 - AMSCAR1 - Amaroo Park, NSW

James Hardie Building Products AMSCAR Series
Round 1 (27/3/1988)

Circuit Length: 1.946 km
Weather: Sunny

Solid entry for the first AMSCAR round of the year. Bond puts the lone Sierra on pole, while Commodore-mounted AMSCAR regulars Ashby and Callaghan qualify strongly. Crompton gets his first run in Brock's BMW, while Finauer makes what would be his only appearance in Glen Molloy's ex-JPS M3.

Heat 1
Race Distance: 10 laps

Barry Jones is set to drive Tony Mulvihill's Commodore, but has to dash off to hospital when told his kidney transplant was ready; Mulvihill returns in time to pilot the car in Heat 2. Bond leads away from Callaghan and a slow-starting Ashby, with the Mobil BMWs trailing. Richards carves his way past the Commodores - with Crompton in tow - but just runs out of time to catch the Caltex Sierra.

While the front row bogs down, Richards makes an electric start to lead the pack over Bitupave Hill. Bond is caught behind the Commodores for a couple of laps before setting off after Richards. Crompton exits the race with a hub failure, while Ashby and Callaghan drop back as their tyres go off. Bond catches and passes Richards late in the race to take the win.

10/4/1988 - ATCC3 - Winton, VIC

1988 Shell Ultra Australian Touring Car Championship
Round 3 - Winton, VIC (10/4/1988)

Circuit Length: 2.03 km
Race Distance: 50 laps
Weather: Sunny

Although the new Nissans, new Commodores and Allan Moffat's Eggenberger Sierra were rumoured to appear at Winton, the only new car that materialised was Robbie Francevic's ex-Wolf Sierra. Longhurst heads home early after several engine failures, while Larry Perkins drags the old VL up into 3rd on the grid, behind another Johnson-Bowe front row.

Bowe makes a bad start, letting Perkins sneak into 2nd. Perkins crashes into Johnson after a botched passing move halfway around the first lap, eliminating both cars. Bowe moves into the lead with Miedecke challenging, but the OXO car soon heads to the pits with turbocharger problems - the result of Miedecke Motorsports lack of sponsorship money. Bowe races on to his first ATCC race win, while Bond holds off Richards for second.

Tragedy strikes when Tony Hunter's Commodore suffers a wheel failure at mid-distance, the loose wheel bounding into a spectator area and killing a young girl.

24/4/1988 - ATCC4 - Wanneroo Park, WA

1988 Shell Ultra Australian Touring Car Championship
Round 4 - Wanneroo Park, WA (24/4/1988)

Circuit Length: 2.41 km
Race Distance: 45 laps
Weather: Overcast with rain

Moffat makes his first appearance in his new ANZ Sierra, while the series regulars are joined by a couple of locals drivers.

DJR hold sway again in qualifying and look set to dominate the race until a rain storm hits the circuit on lap 13. Virtually all the leading contenders slide off the road, and the race is stopped. Confusion reigns over whether the race should be fully restarted, declared with half points, or run on aggregate times. In the end, the race is re-run in its entirety. Several cars struggle with problems caused by sand, ingested when they spun off when the rain hit. Among them Moffat, Miedecke (who lost several laps replacing an alternator) and Bowe, who spun off with brake problems caused by sand filling the cooling ducts. He recovered to finish third, while team boss Johnson ran out a comfortable winner again.

1/5/1988 - ATCC5 - Adelaide International Raceway, SA

1988 Shell Ultra Australian Touring Car Championship
Round 5 - Adelaide International Raceway, SA (1/5/1988)

Circuit Length: 2.41 km
Race Distance: 60 laps
Weather: Sunny

Controversy in the paddock as Francevic's Sierra - still largely as-purchased from Walter Wolf - is ruled illegal on several counts by scrutineers, while Bond protests the 'double-actuator' throttle setup of the Shell cars. The Shell cars are eventually cleared of the charge, but change the setup to the more conventional single-actuator later in the year. Meanwhile, the factory Nissan team turn up with one new car for Fury, while Seton has a run in a Nissan-powered Ralt in the F2 support race. Meanwhile, the new Commodore's homologation is delayed yet again, but the factory Mitsubishi team makes its first start of the year.

With it's long front straight, the powerful Shell Sierras dominate qualifying. Fury qualifies the new Skyline fourth, heading Longhurst, Bond, and Richards in the first M3.

Bowe makes a good start to lead Johnson, the two cars swapping places under brakes for turn 1 on lap 2. From there, the Shell cars aren't headed, lapping up to Brock in 6th place. The Skyline retires early, as does Longhurst. Miedecke held down third until late in the race when he made a quick stop for fuel.

James Hardie Building Products AMSCAR Series
Round 2 (15/5/1988)

Circuit Length: 1.946 km
Weather: Overcast

The regular entry is boosted by the return of Longhurst and the one-off appearance of Johnson, chasing points for a seperate Channel 7-run competition. This time it's Richards that makes way for Crompton in Mobil BMW-land. Johnson's crew time him at under 51 seconds, but official timing gives Longhurst the pole: the first time Johnson has not qualified on pole in 1988.

Heat 1
Race Distance: 10 laps

Johnson legs it from the start and is never headed. Longhurst falls behind Bond after choosing the wrong compound tyre.

This time, Longhurst makes the better start, and the early laps are thrilling as Johnson desperately tries to find a way past the white Sierra. However, an oil pressure warning light augers engine problems for the Shell car, and he drops back behind Brock. A late charge sees him recover to pass Bond on the entry to the last corner for second, while Longhurst takes a commanding victory: the first time the Shell team has lost a race in 1988.

1988 Shell Ultra Australian Touring Car Championship
Round 6 - Lakeside, QLD (22/5/1988)

Circuit Length: 2.41 km
Race Distance: 60 laps
Weather: Sunny

Seton gets the ill-handling new Nissan this weekend, as the ATCC makes it's only stop in Queensland.

Johnson takes a comfortable pole from Miedecke, but a long hold on the start line results in a grabbing clutch, causing him to creep at the start. Miedecke goes with him, and both cop one minute penalties. Miedecke then makes contact with Bowe and spins off at the Carousel, losing even more time. Bowe leads until half distance, when broken rear suspension puts him out and puts Longhurst into the lead. Johnson's pace took him back within range of the podium, but he couldn't shake Longhurst. A quick spin from the Freeport car dropped 10 seconds, but didn't stop Longhurst taking a comfortable win from Johnson, while Moffat finishes on the podium of an ATCC round for the first time since 1984.

1988 Shell Ultra Australian Touring Car Championship
Round 7 - Sandown Park, VIC (29/5/1988)

Circuit Length: 3.90 km
Race Distance: 32 laps
Weather: Overcast

A dry/wet qualifying session leaves Miedecke on pole from Bowe, after rain costs Johnson a chance at beating the OXO driver's lap. However, Miedecke's pole is for naught, as the clutch gives up on the run to the first corner. From there, Johnson is never headed. Bond charges from a low grid spot before retiring. Bowe spins at the second haripin early allowing Longhurst through to second, but he soon retakes the place. A thrilling dice between Jim Richards and Allan Moffat sees the BMW pass the Sierra in the twisty section, before the ANZ car blasts back past down the straight, repeating the sequence for several laps. Fury has an exciting ride when he arrives at turn one with a punctured tyre, while Longhurst retires from third on the last lap. Perkins puts a Commodore onto an ATCC podium for the first time since the Sandown round the previous year, behind the dominant Shell Sierras.

Round 8 - Amaroo Park, NSW (19/6/1988)

Race Distance: 70 laps
Weather: Sunny

Nissan have two cars ready for the first time, while Brock enters a third M3 for Crompton. Miedecke's Sierra runs unsponsored this weekend, to hopefully attract a sponsor. Toyota Team Australia only runs two Corollas, with John Smith out of favour over his Bathurst drive with DJR.

Bond puts in a scintillating lap to beat Johnson to pole, but it's the Shell Sierras that hold sway in the race. Bond misses a gear away from the line and drops to fourth, before he's delayed by a pitstop to change a broken alternator. Johnson drops back with a misfire late in the race, letting Bowe through for his second win of the year, clinching a Shell 1-2 in the championship.

17/7/1988 - ATCC9 - Oran Park, NSW

1988 Shell Ultra Australian Touring Car Championship
Round 9 - Oran Park, NSW (17/7/1988)

Circuit Length: 2.62 km
Race Distance: 50 laps
Weather: Sunny

Johnson seals the championship with a dominant drive, but once again engine troubles cause him to slow in the late laps. Perkins' final drive in the old VL ends early after a clash on the run to turn one breaks his steering arm. Moffat lets Hansford get some practice for the enduros by doing a driver change, and Mark Skaife gets his first run of the year in the #30 Skyline.

Points were handed out as follows, with the worst score dropped and no class points this year:

Outright: 20, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1.

With no endurance championship, the Manufacturers' title was incorporated into the ATCC. I believe this started in 1987, but I don't think I found any data to corroborate my numbers. Point structure went 9, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1 with respect to highest finishing position in class, again with the worst score dropped.

31/7/1988 - AMSCAR4 - Amaroo Park, NSW

James Hardie Building Products AMSCAR Series
Round 4 (31/7/1988)

Circuit Length: 1.946 km
Weather: Sunny

Johnson is in the commentary booth instead of a car for the final AMSCAR round, while Brock once again enters three BMWs. The ex-Sampson/Hunter/Trevethan Starion has its first run in Xerox Shop hands.

Heat 1
Race Distance: 10 laps

Longhurst comfortably wins the first heat, while Bond fights an ill-handling Sierra on his way to third. The AMSCAR title goes down to the last heat with Bond in a commanding position.

Pepsi 250
Oran Park, NSW (28/8/1988)

Circuit Length: 2.62 km
Race Distance: 100 laps
Weather: Mostly Sunny

No top-line Sierras front for the meeting, except Bond, whose brand new car isn't exactly race-ready. The race is between the lead BMW and the factory Nissan. It's Fury in the Skyline that leads until their only pitstop; the Mobil crew get Brock out of the pits with a quick stop, and Skaife can't regain the position. It's Brock's first win on the road since the Surfers ATCC round in 1986, and will be BMW 's last win on Australian soil until 1991.

William Dale Jr should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
11/9/1988 - Enzed 500 - Sandown Park, VIC

Enzed 500
Sandown Park, VIC (11/9/1988)

Circuit Length: 3.90 km
Race Distance: 126 laps
Weather: Cloudy

Subtle changes were made to the track in advance of November's WSPC round. A couple of the corners in the tight infield section had been eased at the apex to increase speed and improve its flow, but it would be the last time touring cars would use the full "Grand Prix" circuit. The entry list drew out everyone who was serious about their Bathurst preparations. Holden Special Vehicles were out in force with the new VL but without Tom Walkinshaw, Armin Hahne stepping into the seat of the 11 car. Longhurst's car now bore the yellow of Benson & Hedges, Johnson/Bowe were in a new car while Johnson's ATCC-winner was shipped back from the UK, and most of the Commodore privateers had upgraded to the new Group A SS spec. The Nissan team were back to full strength, with the #15 car repaired after rolling at Caltex Chase during the Tooheys 1000 launch day at Bathurst.

Johnson dominated qualifying, stoppping the clocks over a second quicker than Longhurst in second. The Nissans appeared to be more competitive, Seton putting his third, while the HSV Commodores lined up sixth and ninth on their debut.

Shades of the ATCC round at the start as Longhurst made a good initial jump, but broke a driveshaft. The time lost would put the #25 car out of contention, but its speed augered well for Bathurst. Meanwhile, Seton's good grid spot went for naught when the gearbox broke. It would prove to be Seton's last complete racing lap for the Nissan team. Johnson led early, before recurring overheating problems forced him to drop back. The lead swapped between Moffat, Fury and Perkins, before the second Skyline stopped with a broken tailshaft. Meanwhile, the two Mobil BMWs suffered reliability problems, and didn't appear to be fast enough to win anyway. Moffat/Hansford went on to take a comfortable win - Moffat's first since 1984 - from Perkins/Hulme. Confusion surrounded third place as Johnson/Bowe limped their Sierra to the line on the starter motor, having spent the last few laps in the pits overheating. Fourth-placed Noske/Moore contended that they had completed more laps than the Shell duo, but the result stood.

William Dale Jr should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
2/10/1988 - Tooheys 1000 - Mount Panorama, NSW

Tooheys 1000
Mount Panorama, NSW (2/10/1988)

Circuit Length: 6.216 km
Race Distance: 161 laps
Weather: Sunny

Unlike the previous year the invasion of European teams didn't happen. Schnitzer got as far as entering two cars but didn't make the trip, one of their entries taken up by a NZ BMW. Wolf Racing brought a car and team out for Mark Petch and Robbie Francevic, while Ruedi Eggenberger came out to run Allan Moffat's ex-Eggenberger Sierra, bringing with him a team of mechanics and Klaus Niedzwiedz. Niedzwiedz regular co-driver, Klaus Ludwig, didn't return, but Dieudonne and Soper came out to co-drive the Miedecke Motorsport cars. Meanwhile, Nissan favourite Anders Olofsson made his first trip to Bathurst to co-pilot Skyline #15.

Brinksmanship was the order of raceweek as protests and counter-protests flew. Tom Walkinshaw protested the eligibility of cars #4, #17, #18, #25, and #28, but later bizzarely withdrew the protest on any of the cars should they win the race, "...in the interests of the sport". The Johnson team then protested the factory HSV Commodores for steering and body irregularities. All Sierras were eventually cleared - although a turbocharger issue with Bond's car was not resolved until long after the race - while the Commodores were found to be illegal. The protested Sierra teams claim the Friday night teardown of their cars compromised their race preparations, which was likely the whole point of the protest in the first place.

Meanwhile, there was a race to be run. Johnson, Bowe, Longhurst, and Niedzwiedz battled it out through qualifying, but it's Johnson and Bowe who lock up the front row, after Niedzwiedz's bid is derailed by a gearbox problem in the final qualifying session. With the top 10 runoff not counting for the grid this year, the times set during the week settle who starts where on the Sunday. Eight Sierras fill the top 10, with Perkins and Fury the only non-Ford runners. Walkinshaw would start from 13th in his English-built Commodore, just ahead of Armin Hahne in the Wolf Sierra. The lead Mobil BMW qualifies 16th, just ahead of Seton in the second Skyline. Several privateers miss the cut in qualifying after the 110% rule was strictly applied by FISA officials.

Johnson, Niedzwiedz and Longhurst took off at the start, setting a breakneck pace while Bowe watched on in fourth. Disaster for Walkinshaw as suspension failure eliminated his Commodore after just 5 laps. Attrition hit the top 10 early, with Miedecke, Granberg, Bagnall and Fury all retiring or suffering delays in the first hour. Brock is stuck behind the Commodore of Harvey, the two old teammates having a fair old dice which at one point saw the Mobil M3 take a trip across the sandtrap at Skyline. Meanwhile, Johnson picked up a slow puncture going up the hill in lapped traffic. The tyre blows half-way down Conrod, sending the Shell car into a lurid, high-speed spin. He dragged the car slowly back to the pits, but drivetrain damage causes the car to be retired. The team was soon reduced to one car when Bowe brought #28 in with a blown engine. Out front was Niedzwiedz alone, with Longhurst dropping a lap after making two trips to the pits to sort out a sticking throttle. The battle of the Commodores settled down with Grice heading to the pits with gearbox problems. Terry Finnigan's Commodore punctured a tyre, depositing the carcass on Conrod. An unsighted Brock slammed into it, smashing the oil cooler and delaying the #56 car. Richards is put into #57 with Brock scheduled to get in at the next stop, but the car soon retired with overheating problems. John Andretti crashed at Reid Park, bringing out the pace car.

The race finally settled down, with the ANZ Sierra leading by a lap. Hahne, Mezera, Hulme, and Bond scrapped for the minor placings. Johnson gets into the #18 car, but a broken starter motor delayed the car for 6 minutes. The Scott/Nakaya Starion worked its way up into the top 5 before gearbox failure ended their run. The Finnigan car blew an engine and parked off the road at Skyline, where it was later hit by the #54 BMW. The Crowe/Janson car was the strongest remaining M3, working its way inside the top 10 as the afternoon rolled on. The Peanut Slab Sierra retired from the top five with ovearheating, while Walkinshaw hopped into car #10. When the Willmington Commodore stopped in the sand trap at Skyline, the pace car came out to pick up all the dead cars. On the restart, Longhurst passed Hansford to move back onto the lead lap, but the end was nigh for the ANZ car. The car came in to make its final stop with 30 laps to go, but it was apparent something was amiss. The car was soon retired with a blown headgasket. Longhurst took the lead from Walkinshaw, Bowe, Bond, and Janson. The HSV Commodore soon retired, though, with no oil pressure. Mezera hopped in for the final stint, narrowly avoiding the spinning Lusty Commodore, to take the win. Johnson used three cars to finish second, while Bond/Jones take third despite a late stop. The Janson/Crowe M3 finishes a remarkable 4th outright in winning its class, while the class-winning Corolla snuck inside the top 10.

12/11/1988 - South Australia Cup - Adelaide Grand Prix Circuit, SA

South Australia Cup
Adelaide Grand Prix Circuit, SA (12/11/1988)

Circuit Length: 3.78 km
Race Distance: 32 laps
Weather: Sunny

Most of the top runners had made the trip to New Zealand, but unlike the previous year's dramas all were back in time to prepare for the last race on Australian soil for 1988. However, the entry included no Moffat or Petch Sierras, while Pukekohe-winner Andrew Miedecke was racing at the Intertec 500 in Japan.

Sierras lead from the start, but the hot conditions soon gets to them; Longhurst blows a head gasket, while both Shell cars struggle with heat-related misfires. Into the lead surge the two HSV Commodores of Perkins and Denny Hulme, to record the General's only win of 1988. It is also the marque's first win since race 1 of the 1987 AMSCAR series, and their last until the 1990 Tooheys 1000.

The team seemed to lose their way after this, struggling with engine reliability. When did they start running Motec engine management? Was it from the beginning? It was great to see their resurgence in 1990, capped by Bondy's two wins at Lakeside and Mallala.
They started using Motec in 1989 which was a horror season for them.

The two HSV Commodores should be shown as DISQ at Bathurst rather than DNF.

So the disqualification was retrospectively applied to the results (as it should be)?

It's just that I've just never found any record of the results being updated to reflect the DQ, not even in the most recent edition of Australia's Greatest Motor Race.

They were never disqualified. Walkinshaw dropped his protest against Longhursts car after it won. But Bondy had a big fight against the protest on his Turbo that went on for months. In the end the charge could not be proven and the fact it was purchased from Garrets the protest was thrown out.

I really believe now as I did then that Walkinshaws protest was to upset the race prep on the leading Sierras, I dont think he expected to find anything but by protesting suspensions and engines etc and having them taken apart before the race it did upset the teams involved. One interesting point was the only Sierra team up there that he didn't protest was the ANZ Allan Moffat team. Which were running Eggenberger Sierras and which only a year before had been found to be illegal.
