No, it's been running for a while. It's quite a junior category, so most people outside of Japan won't have heard of it, unlike Japanese F3 or Formula Nippon.
There is a new 2litre series starting in Japan next season though, supporting some rounds of Formula Nippon and one of Super GT. |

Hummmm, fine, Monkey, thanks! I will try to find their websites. Dan, the series is not new. It's a kind of Toyota scholarship series in Japan, as far as I know. |

Not a lot, I'm afraid.
It is called Formula Challenge. It is designed as a feeder category F. Nippon, and will be run by JRP, who also run Nippon. It will use spec chassis, engine and tyres. Drivers must be under 26 and not have previously competed in F3 or higher. The winner will get a paid drive (or possibly just a test - depending on how you read it) in Nippon the following year. It runs over five weekends, with two races each weekend. Four of them support Formula Nippon (Suzuka 8/7, Fuji 26/8, Motegi 21/10 and Suzuka again 18/11), with the other running as a support to Super GT at Fuji on August 5th. JRP say they will announce more details by the end of the year. |

I don't think they have teams listed, but Formula Toyota results can be found here:

Official F-Toyota site (Japanese only):
http://www.toyota.co.jp/ms/ft/index.html I don't read or speak Japanese, but with the Bridgestone-site I can determine the drivers. Now is there someone who can translate the entrants into english? I mean the teams running the cars (not the sponsors). About the new "Formula Challenge", is that perhaps a Japanese Formula Renault 2.0 Series? Early 2005 there were some rumours about such a series for this year, but it never happened (as far as I know). Second try? |

Leo, what I know is that the Tatuus Renault 2.0 car is now used in a New Zealand Formula Toyota, very interesting series, indeed.
About the Formula Challenge, I don't think the car is similar to f-renault, unless they plan to launch a new technical package for 2006. |
