Your Classic/Historic Festival
This has sprung from another conversation I've been having with Simon Drabble.
If we could get a weekend "festival" together with a race from each UK Historic or classic racing Club plus the Top Hat/Cloth Cap/70s Group 1 on the bill, what other championships would you want and where would you hold it? Practice on Saturday, racing on Sunday, so a mid-summer date would be necessary. Or even the May Bank Holiday? Just to kick things off mine would be: Top Hat CTCRC Historics MGCC BCV8 70's Group 1 HSCC Derek Bell Single Seaters Classic Formula Ford Cloth Cap VSCC Pre War Sports Cars The Circuit? Silverstone International. |

Look at it from that point of view though.
That meeting is FIA sponsored so it gets full/oversubscribed grids and where do most cars come from? The UK. The track has a major part to play but if you put on a bill of fare like your proposal Zef at (say) Silverstone International (the GP is too drawn out for slower cars spectatorwise) I'm certain it would be a success. The problem may be that Coys, rather like Goodwood, was invites only to a certain extent so blokes like me who have cars the public want to see don't get invited because it isn't expensive or something that Jim Clark raced! Mind you my bodywork bill this year would send TWR's receivers into overdrive!!! Hence my question. What would you like to see. |

Hmm - I'm going to put in a vote for Oulton Park.
And in amongst those lovely tree-lined avenues there would be: VSCC Edwardians vintage Bentleys vs. allcomers (1920s/30s) Pre-war GP cars BRDC Fifties Sportscars 1950s Front Engined GP cars Sixties tin-tops Recreation of the Autosport Marque Sportscars (Sprites, TRs, Fairthorpes and Elvas) Group 1 Saloons DFV era Formula 1 (1967-1980-ish) AMOC Intermarque Sorry to those who like small-engined single-seaters but there's just no room for those on my bill. Another reason for Oulton is the large expanse of grassy infield which could have some car club displays and lots n' lots of memorabilia stalls. |

Three day meeting at Oulton or Brands Hatch GP circuit - practice Saturday, racing Sunday and (bank holiday) Monday. Races for:
- Late '60s / early '70s sports prototypes - 1 litre F3 (with later FJs if field needs filling) - Late '60s Group 2 spec saloons - Pre-'66 GTs - with emphasis on variety of marques - '70s Group 1 spec saloons - 1600cc F2 - Pre-'74 F1 / F5000 - '50s sports racers - Post-1948 front engined GP - Allcomers saloons (pre approx '78) |

Glad I started this. Tim you make a good point about space for Car clubs and the first to do so.

I'd suggest Cadwell as the venue...nothing to do with proximity just the ambience.
For me just transplant the Six Hours of Spa weekend to Cadwell (bit still keep the Spa one of course) and I'd be as happy as a pig in sh......erbert Lot's of GT40's and Renault Alpines too Last edited by PaulSands; 16 Apr 2004 at 19:49. |

Trouble with Cadwell is the narrow circuit. Everything else could be provided.
Imagine a McLaren M8 or a GT40 leaping over the mountain. No neither could I. Tim's nomination of Oulton Park would be good and indeed they have the "Gold Cup" there now. |

Oulton Park then I agree. Build on the Gold Cup to become the new Coys and add in the optional dress code.
While they are at it, re-plant the trees down the avenue and get rid of the Knickerbrook dog-leg to make it the challenging corner it once was. |

I'm still grinning at the thought of a GT40 trying to do the mountain and Halls bends !!!
it'd certainly sort the men from the boys, and keep Lincolnshires emergency services busty too |

The new Ferrari Classico series for pre 89 road going cars plus any of the above but pre83 (for me) GT40's B16's DFV's and I like the idea of Silverstone International if this is to be an event for competitors rather than spectators - bring one of two of Julius's classes along too - then some other open wheelers - F2FVA or F3 similar era perhaps

I'd go for Oulton or Silverstone Historic GP...and I've heard on the grapevine that the BRDC have reserved Silverstone for 3 days in late July 2005 for exactly this purpose. Looks like "Coys" might be on the way back. As long as it's anywhere other than Rockingham.....

Well that would be interesting to see it back as it was in its original (1989 to 93) guise.
However as a driver's circuit the International is IMO the best configuration. And where Silverstone scores is its space. You can erect stands, concession stalls, bars etc, without encroaching on the paddocks and racing areas. Agreed it loses its appeal as a spectator arena but then again if the grandstands are free the views can be very good. As to dress code. I'm sure its good fun to dress up but I'm not sure of the relevance. Go to Spa in September and wander around the paddock areas for free. Talk to the drivers and touch the cars. Surely that's what a Historic *event* is really about. BTW. The views at spa are somewhat restricted but that's due to geography. |

Mnn Cadwell definitely, without that stupid chicane at Knickerbrook, but can we have an Edwardian VSCC race in there too?
