Roadsweepers on racetracks
I am wondering how many circuits hire in roadsweepers for race events and how many are aware of a possible safety issue with them?
We use them at Rockingham and they were out at Thruxton too over this BTCC weekend, and I'm sure I've seen them at Silverstone too. The actual sweeper brushes are either narrow metal strips or plastic filaments. Assuming the metal brushes are more efficient, I presume the drivers prefer to use them over the plastic. However, the metal strips (very) frequently get detached and are therefore left on the track - and being long, narrow with a sharp point they are ideal to cut/puncture tyres. It's a very quick job for the driver to swap the brushes over, so I urge fellow marshals to watch for this and maybe suggest brushes get swapped over if they see sweepers with metal brushes fitted. I would say that sweepers offer a quick and efficient way to clear crud from a track, in these days of quick turnarounds between races, where there isn't always time to do it 'the old fashioned way. |

The word is you're looking for is tines
and yes, I've spent ages at an F1 event picking them up. more time than it took for the sweeper to put them down However.... the worst "use" of a sweeper was at the first DTM visit to Brands Hatch. That sweeper sucked - big style, as well as swept. A wondorous piece of kit that we were truly in awe of. Just before the feature DTM race somebody made a right mess of Paddock Hill, so Mr Green and I decide that the sweeper would be in order (t'was a really, really hot day). Race control had to inform us that (a bit like F1) there could be no on-track activity immediately prior to the precious DTMs, could we all get out and do it the old fashioned way. |

Yes we have the sweper's at Thruxton and a couple of times marshalls and breakdown4's crew have had to walk the track down looking for pointy bit's of metal!

The first thing we get told at Albert Park is that they are told to use nylon brushes but the occasional steel brushed sweeper slip through and we are asked to check our sectors for the lovely bits of metal.
I worked at an event at a rural airport last year and while walking the strip to work out the distances we picked up about a dozen metal tines and when we told the local council rep what they were and what would happen if a plane picked them up he strangely enough went a pale shade of white for a few seconds |

not too much work! it was a bit pointless walking round after the sweeper to clean the track... |

Probably less efort to pick up the Tines than sweep the track the old fashioed way though.
Just thinking of my own exercise to beer ratio. I don't want that put out of kilter in the middle of a race meet. |
