Rydell wins, Menu retires, Cleland enjoys the Swedish weather

Race Of Champions Race
STCC 02/09/01

Rickard Rydell won the thrilling S60 Race Of Champions race today at Knutstorp. Rydell had poleposition and took the start. Nilsson was in second place and looked to have made a better start than Rydell. But Rickard managed to get the power down better than Nilsson who dropped behind. A fight was developing mean while between Cleland and Kox. Peter Kox was infront with Cleland right behind. Cleland seemed to have a bit better pace, and yes, a few corners later Cleland passed Kox. Peter Sundfelt got in trouble, he went off the track and stranded his S60 in the graveltrap which brought the safety car out. As the start went again the order was Rydell-Menu-Nilsson-Colciago.

It was only three laps left when ”Flash” Nilsson made his move on Alain Menu. With a clean and nice move Flash was now up on second place, right behind Rydell. The Italian Roberto Colciago followed Flash up in to third place, Menu was dropping behind quick. Sadly Alain was forced to retire, he pulled in to the pits with his S60. The real action in the race came only in the last corner. Flash was determined that he would get by Rydell. Flash managed to get his car alongside Rydell on the very last lap. The two drivers were side-by-side with only a few corners left. But Rydell used his experience and retook the place. The order over the finish line was Rydell-Nilsson-Colciago. The weather was really awful during this race. But there was one man who was happy about the rain; John Cleland. ”It’s good of you Swedes to lay on Scottish weather, it feels like I’m home!”

Cleland, as ever, with a good ol' bit of humour!

That was a close race, how many laps was it Johan?
