Murray Walker
Anyone got any thoughts on the old man of commentary?
I couldn't help laugh at his new book - anyone else spot the error on one of the photo captions? It was great though to read one of his favourite forms of motor racing is RALLYCROSS (Yes!) |

I have only read bits of the book in the shop but hopefully I have dropped enough hints so that I will be able to read it on the 25th

I would have bought the book had I gone to Indianapolis this year, because he would have been there to sign autographs and such oh well, suppose I could buy it online.

I noticed one big error.
He says the Mansell banging his head on the girder incident happened in Portugal in 1990. Wrong Murray. It was in Austria in 1987. |

Well Hakkiman, I reckon the photo of Graham Hathaways rallycross car is not at Lydden - I think its Brands Hatch. Anyone confirm this?

Well it seems there is a list of 'Murrayisms' in the book... deliberate ?

I'm afraid I have to say I'm not a massive fan of the guy. His 'Murrey-isms' just became annoying over the years and he developed a strange fanaticism towards Michael Schumacher which alienated me from him even more!

Read the book Damon - is that your name or are you a DH fan ? - and you'll read his answer to that criticism!

I am DH fan, my real name's Nathan!! Aside from that though, I couldn't help but feel that during his later years at ITV his commenteries became somewhat dumbed down and gimmicky when compared to his style whilst on the BBC. I doubt this was his fault mind, merely ITV's way of trying to attract new viewers I guess.

Well if you're a Damon fan you'll know all about how hard he found it at times to keep a lid on his excitement! People used to say he was biased towards 'Our Nige' but that was not a patch on how he commentated on Damon...
And, yes, I suspect you are right about the change in his commentary over the years. Though I wonder what difference the loss of his partner, Hunt, and then Imola 94 had on things ? |

I think i remember Murray commentating on the BBC @ Spa 1995 where Damon and Michael had that big fight, wasn't too hard to figure out on who's side Murray was.
I don't know about Murray losing his style at ITV, since the last time i heard him was at that particular race at Spa... Last edited by ASCII Man; 7 Dec 2002 at 21:38. |

Been a big Murray fan ever since I first started watching F1 back in 1994... haven't actually had a chance to read the book yet, as I've been away for the last week, but I bought a copy just before I went away, and had the pleasure of listening to the man himself talking about some of the many races he's seen, among other things, at an event in Edinburgh last week - I'm an even bigger fan now! Also got my book signed after the interview was over, and that was great to be able to speak to him face to face for a minute - great guy

I'm pleased to say I've met him too, in the paddock at Thruxton a few years ago at a BTCC/F3 day. Got him to sign my programme, together with Coulthard, Barrichello, Stewart (Jackie) and a host of other F3 and BTCC drivers. It was a good day.

I'm in the middle of watching the '95 BTVC season review video and i have to say Murray's commentary is great, he knows all the cars and drivers, he goes right through the field and he has so much enthusiasm. Actually the telecast quality could teach Channel Ten a thing or three.
