Onboard camera

Hello all,

Has anyone had any experience of installing an onboard camera onto a Formula Ford. I have acquired one and would really love to fit it to the car. I can get brackets made etc, and was thinking of installing it on the roll hoop. I've spoke to BRSCC and scrutineers who obviously need prior warning to check it all over. Main question really is has anyone done this or can give me advise? Car is a VD '89 where the roll hoop protrudes
the bodywork. any help would be great.

In an effort to get the thread going, I would suggest you will need some sort of damping.

You could try using rubber/polyurethane suspension bushings in the brackets to isolate vibrations. That'll be the main problem, the rest is just a matter of ensuring it's firmly secured.

We have used them on F1 cars regularly (I don't mean the big ones on the roll hoop!) All we have done is wrap them in foam tape and ty rap'd them to the car where ever we wanted to film, including the footwell under the engine cover. I suppose a lot will depend on the size of your camera etc. Good Luck!

Johnny Bravo - Things sound like they have changed quite alot since I had my time in F1 onboard camera. I take it you work for a team and not Bernie? Good idea with the foam though, thanks for the idea, its simple and cheap I might just go that route.
Cheers Lee I agree that vibration will be the main problem, we seem to have cracked how to secure it so now its down to damping. I really want to keep it simple.

interesting fact - Did you know that the damping in the F1 camera's on the roll hoop is internal rubber tubing brought from the local garden centre.

No Richard I did not know that the internal damping was rubber tubing from the local garden centre.

Thanks!!

Try to avoid attaching it to the top of the roll hoop, just in case

Remember if you are racing at an Octagon track (Brands, Snet, Oulton, Cadwell, Sliverstone) you need written permission. You will probably also need permission from the organising club. Read the supplimentary reg v. carefully.

And for a small fee, we marshals will look after it for you should you happen to 'lose it' during a race

Are baseball gloves standars Marshalling kit then? maybe they should be to catch debris from cars, or the tyres as they hit them?

You've seen me then!!!!!

Actually, in all honesty, I always try and pass any debris to the wrecker crews as they pass after the race/session, with the number of the car it came from. I figure you guys have enough expence without adding to it by some peoples trophy hunting expeditions.

A marshal returned a piece of exhaust from our car. We needed to refit it to get us out in the next race. The RAC noise tester wanted to check! Never got to say thanks, because we don't know who returned it.

I'm not sure how much of a trophy the rear box of an XJS makes!

Depends how desperate you are for trophies Adam

It's a subject that really annoys me. Why should marshals or anyone else think they have the right to take debris as souveneers? The guys who race at most levels have worked damn hard to get their cars on the grid in the first place and can ill afford to have bits that fall off their cars 'go walkabout'

there was a story circulating a few years ago about a minardi steering wheel that went "missing" after a car went off, the marshall blabbed about it quite a bit, and minardi got to hear about, apparently some rather large guys turned up at this guys house and demanded it back lol
(i dont know how true that is! but it sounds likely!!)

To get back to the point!

Are you sure that you want to fit an on-board camera? As I'm sure Stephen will attest, this makes you almost certain to crash!

Richard,

I suggest you contact demon-tweaks, although they don't advertise it they have brackets, tape, coduit cable etc etc and I think they even have a guide on mounting your camera and how to get the best film with it.

It think the problem would be where to store the recorder with the tape in it.

Where did you aquire the camera.

Matt.

Have a look at www.b-hague.co.uk

I bought a suction pad camera mount from them which is very good - they have lots of grip mounts as well.

I used a small remote camera ty-rapped direct to the roll bar on my F3, and connected it to a camcorder that sat beneath my knees. Didn't bother with foam or anything, just some clingfilm to protect the lens from oil etc.

Teletubby, You were spot on, it does bring bad luck! Lap 2 in qualifing and shunted a back marker who was going very slow on line. Lap 4 in the race (started 35th and last due to shunt, got up to 9th tho!) spun while trying to avoid another spinner on exit and that was it for me. Got some great footage of marshals recoving the car!

Richard, if you ever get decent pics of marshals at work I would love to have a copy as we can use them for our advertising literature.

Sorry to hear about the spins tho and the shunt, but Martin did warn you
