Barnard and Williams have composite gearbox!
Gazzetta dello Sport is reporting John Barnard has been working closely with Williams, developing a miniature (and very light) gearbox made from composite materials that would allow them to run a very sleek (F2002 style) rear end on their car next year. The plan is to introduce it mid-season...
Hopefully, this will be the innovation that allows Schummi Jr. and Juan Pablo to challenge the F2003! Fingers crossed.... Last edited by Inigo Montoya; 19 Nov 2002 at 15:15. |

Indeed - fingers crossed. But by then TGF might be leading the championship by 50 points...

So, after achieving their legendary reliability using a traditional approach, Williams takes one step further....

Way to go.
Introduction mid-season - not way to go! By mid 2003 Ferrari will be at the next level. Still, here's hoping. Aren't McLaren bringing in something similar? Hope so. These two teams have got to get very, very radical - and soon. It's one hell of a job just to get up to F2002 level - add in the reliability and you can see what a challenge they face. It would probably take a full year just to make the 2002 cars as reliable as the 2002 Ferrari. How depressing. |

Mid-season ?
Poor Williams. This time they'll finish in 3rd place in the WCC. |

I believe the report of mid-2003 season was speculation, seeing as such a revolutionary gearbox is sure to have reliability concerns. Who knows, they might have it ready on time?!

Didn't Prost run a composite gearbox in the early years?

Nothing against the other teams (I like Arrows!) but I'm sure Williams stand a much better chance of getting it to work than the previously mensioned teams.

He's only good at designing cars isn't he? How would he be responsible in developing a gearbox for williams? although he was the one who introduced the semi-auto gearbox in f1....

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the main problem in the past one of flexing?
If I remember right it created problems not only with cracking and the like but it affected shifting...Perhaps they have newer composites that have more rigidity? |

Thanks for the added info on him Inigo, Glen...i would love to see how he would get rid of the large and heavy bellhousing as miniaturising parts of the gearbox won't just about do it as the rear suspension is connected to the bellhousing and knowing the Williams design of rear suspensions....unless they are willing to change but then it'll be interesting to see and if only by mid season next season...don't they learn, you can't change the look and shape of the car from taking off parts here and there and bolt it on to an existing car.

Achieving Ferrari standards of reliability will be impossible - it was unprecedented this year, and I doubt Ferrari can live up to it again this year...
The main thing next year is being as fast as possible and taking the risks whatever the cost. |
