Most laps led bonus.
Can anybody tell me why Da Matta was awarded 1 bonus point for leading most laps at Portland?
He led exactly the same number (55) as Kenny Brack, but Brack was not awarded a point! |

In the event of a tie, the point goes to the highest finishing position.

It's not really fair.
You may dominate half of the race and have a tire going its way and you don't even get a point. Either a point for both or half points, that would be more fair in my opinion. Last edited by Jordi; 17 Jun 2002 at 20:46. |

Fair or not, you need a tiebreaker, and finishing higher is the most logical choice. It is much the same way in the point standings that a tie breaker goes to the driver with higher finishing positions. Ask Dario Franchitti if he thinks it is fair...

You don't need a tiebreaker. I say give them both a point.

Its very fair. Brack didn't finish, so does not get the point.

Of course you need a tiebreaker. If 20 drivers lead 5 laps each of a 100 lap race, does everybody get a point? There is only bonus point available for leading the most laps.

You don't need a tiebreaker. CART can make whatever rules they want and they can change the rules. I don't think the tiebreaker for the most laps led is needed.
If 5 people lead the same number of laps there is nothing inherently wrong with giving them all a bonus point because they all achieved the same thing. Also, you could give none of them a point because none of them really led the most laps. If my understanding of the word 'most' is correct than two people can never both have the most of anything. 'Most' implies having more than anyone else; thus no ties. |

I'm with SevenGrain- you need a tiebreaker for everything.
What if 20 cars set an identical time in qualifying? Do they give every car a point, and have them 20 wide at the start? |

It's fair the way it is. Everyone plays by the same rules. If Christiano lost the tire Kenny would get the point. I think it's called "racing luck". Some days you have it and some you don't.

The best result would be to give neither driver a championship point. Just as in qualifying, if the session is rained out, and they revert to the points standings, then the driver claiming the pole position (i.e. 1st in the points chase) does NOT recieve the championship point because he did not "earn" it. While DaMatta and Brack both equally deserved the point, neither distingushed themselves, thus cancelling eachother out.

Arneal's interpretation of the word "most" is kinda hard to argue. Maybe nobody should get a point, seeing as nobody truly led the most laps.
