Mugen Honda F3 engine
Does any one know what road car engine the current F3 Mugen Honda engine is based on? They have to use the block from a road car does any one know from which car it comes?
And also the same for the Vauxhall/Opal F3 engine? Henry |

I'm gutted knowone has answered this, you've got me interested now. I would of thought the vauxhall/opel blocks would be the same casting as your supersport ones, can't think what else it would be. I'm pretty sure the ill fated ford f3 motor was originally an 1800cc puma block. You thinking of building a cheap Mugen replica for one of Chirons then?

I believe that up until a couple of years ago, F3 regs stated that an engine had to be based on a production block and head. The assumption would be that the Mugen was based on either the 1600 or 2000 engine that is used in the Civic but minus all the variable valve timing stuff. I have heard of engine builders starting with a small engine and going oversquare to make a lightweight two litre short stroke.
I think the F3 rules have been loosened up know. I think the Merc engine used in Euro F3 is a bespoke race engine. have you tried talking to Neil Brown Engines? - They used to do deal with the Mugen stuff in Britain |

Thanks for the replies
Reason for the post is that we are putting a Honda K20 (Civic Type R) engine in one of our cars for the US and was wondering if any of the F3 Mugen bits would fit, cam cover, dry sump system etc. Would like to mount the engine semi stressed if possible and i know that the F3 Mugen Honda is mounted fully stressed in the cars. I will give Neil Brown a call see if any of the parts will fit the K20 civic engine. |

ALL F3 engines are production based. The rules are as tight as a fish's bum.
The MBenz engine is the M271 which I think is from the C200. The current Ford engine (as attempted by Swindon) is the 1.7L Zetec from the Puma. The Mugen started off as the F20B/B20A6 but was changed about 97-98 for the H22A. Next year it might become the F20C/K20A but it hasn't been decided for sure. The Alfa's are based on the 1.6L Tipo engine. Toyota are still using the 3SGE from the Celica of yore. |
