Seven races - you pick them
Given that CART will have a maximum of seven races on Network TV next year, which seven races would you pick to best represent CART? (of course the actual decision will be based more on CBS scheduling than what's good for CART, but we can pretend)
The seven races I would pick are 1. Michigan Oops, forgot about that, I'll start again 1. Long Beach 2. Milwaukee 3. Cleveland 4. Toronto 5. Road America 6. Surfer's Paradise 7. Fontana What do you think...? |

1. Cleveland. The site looks rinky dink, but the race consistently provides excellent action.
2. Fontana. 500 mile superspeedways are my favorite. 3. Long Beach. As street courses go this one typically produces a lot of passing and seeing SoCal on the Tube in early April is pretty nice. 4. Portland. Nice track with a high rain potential which makes the races more interesting. 1997 was a classic. 5. Surfers Paradise. Excellent site; aerial shots are beautiful. Typically has decent on track action. 6. Elkhart Lake. Nice track. 7. Laguna Seca. Nice course. Corkscrew. Dern, I would like to put Milwaukee on the list, but it isn't fitting. Now I'm thinking CART should have held out for 8 races. |

1. Toronto
2. Montreal 3. Long Beach 4. Road America 5. Monterry (lots of Mexicans in the Western US will tune in) 6. Cleveland 7. Mid-Ohio Since Champ Cars is basically a road and street race sport, they should market it as such. |

I think Milwaukee is important because it rides the coat tails of Indy. Indy provides, hands down, the most exposure open wheel racing will get all season long. Given that more CART teams will be at Indy this year, They should stay visible while the momentum exists.

Good point, although you risk a rainout when you televise superspeedways. And of course you have to take into consideration CBS' mealymouthed "other sports permitting" contract and think what might possibly kick the races in question off the air ...

One thing I think this shows is just how hard it is to narrow it down to great 7 events. They're all great, and huge successes in the towns they run in. Not too many empty seats at any of the road/street courses...

FONTANA - Gotta show the 500! Although Liz's point of the rain-risk is a good one.
TORONTO - Great city. Great country. MEXICO - Show the NASCAR fans that there has to be something attractive about CART, how else could they sell 400,000 tickets? AUSTRALIA - The scenery is breathtaking, the racing quite good. ROAD AMERICA - Just can't beat it. LONG BEACH - The "crown jewel"? Picturesque, with the QEII in the harbour, and all of the Hollywood stars. CLEVELAND - Usually one of the most exciting races of the year. Notice a recurring theme? The same tracks are being mentioned by most all of us. |

Another reason to show Toronto is to showcase the Andretti name .

All the Canadian races are shown on network TV here. Although it is only flag to flag and no fun stuff at the end.

Sure with Montreal you get a comparision, but I can assure you that someone out there would get confused by it...
I think it will simply come down to who fits into the TV schedule, and possibly who has the most money. Surfers might be a good chance, since that with the time zones, it would likely be delayed, thus if the race runs long, they can crop some of the pace car periods out to fit it into the schedule. |
