Michelin to supply fewer teams with tyres in 2006
So, the big question is which teams will (have to) change to Bridgestone? It is quiet obvious Red Bull is going to change with their Ferrari deal. But rumours mention Williams and Toyota as well. I don't really see the reason for that
Toyota and Bridgestone because their both Japanese? And Williams because they are starting from scratch anyway? Really I can't think of any logical explanation... Is Ferrari going to allow Bridgestone to change their tyres to suit other teams as well? Will they stay Bridgestones no1 team, even though Toyota might become the quicker team?? Questions, questions, questions! |

As reported a few weeks back the Toyota deal could be linked to the passenger car division. All new Toyota's may come with Bridgestone tyres as original manufacturer equipment.
Williams? Maybe it was a better deal. See the following threads: Toyota, Serious about winning? http://tentenths.com/forum/showthrea...ta+bridgestone Bridgestone for Williams in2006? http://tentenths.com/forum/showthrea...ms+bridgestone |

Michelin want to get out of the sport now anyway since Mosley wants the control tyre for 2008, so the sooner the better it seems for some teams. Williams need a technical advantage to get back to the top, and if thats a better tyre for the short term, and a stronger relationship with the tyre company in the long term, so be it.

I'm not sure which teams have existing contrazcts with Michelin for 2006, or how easy/expensive it would be to buy those out. Toyota have been rumoured to be switching to Bridgestone for years now and it has never happened - is it more likely when they could be about to pip Ferrari to third, almost entirely due to the tyres. I know Bridgestone could have the better tyre in 2006, and the cahcne of this theoretically increases if they have more teams to test with, but it would be a serious gamble.

I guess we can rule out BAR and Sauber/BMW from switching as they've both only fairly recently dumped Bridgestone.
Williams might be likely, anything to gamble on getting an advantage over Renault and McLaren. Red Bull are guarenteed to switch rubber to aid Ferrari with their testing. Toyota could go either way it seems, they might feel they're onto a good thing with Michelin at the moment but, like all teams, why not change now and get a full season on new tyres before the control tyre is introduced? |

Maybe there will be a shock and another tyre manufacturer will enter for 2006.

Of course, it's not exactly a small one...
Do you think it's wise for them to have made their interest public though? |

I hope it never happens that F1 has a spec tyre - as that means its NOT Formula 1.
But how many manufacturers bidded for the GP2 contract? Did Michelin? I am not sure that they are interested in series that isn't open spec. |

Michelin supplied control tyres to the BTCC for several seasons, using both their own name and later the BF Goodrich brand

It's not necessarily a control tyre - just one tyre manufacturer. I think that would in some ways be better for the sport.

Maybe 10 tyre manufacturers would be better - a different one for each team.

Ban Michelin..ban Bridgestone.. make teams develop their own tyres.
After playing with exotic metals...it's time they do the rubber. A Toyota car powered by Toyota engine with Toyota tyres...every team is forced to be self sufficient. ... A single tyre manufacturer offering 2 or even 3 different compounds would be enough to add spice up F1 from a tyres aspect. |
