How many drivers will compete in this years F1 world championship? At the moment we have the following:
Michael Schumacher Rubens Barrichello Jenson Button Takuma Sato Fernando Alonso Giancarlo Fisichella Nick Heidfeld Mark Webber Juan Pablo Montoya Kimi Raikkonen Felipe Massa Jacques Villeneuve David Coulthard Christian Klien Ralf Schumacher Jarno Trulli Narain Karthikeyan Tiago Monteiro Christijan Albers Who will or could replace some of those? Liuzzi will be shoehorned in at Red Bull at some point.
Neither Minardi or Jordan drivers are a safe bet to last the season (unless Minardi choose Michael Schumacher as their second pilot). And I somehow get the feeling JV will walk out mid-season. |

Can't see JV staying around too long to be honest,to be replaced by Luzzi.

Both Jordan drivers are safe for the whole season.
Barring a bit of Klien/Liuzzi swapping, I don't expect any driver changes unless injury or illness intervene. |

I don't agree JV will leave. More chance of Michael retiring IMO. NOT GONNA HAPPEN!
As far as I can see it the replacements for the teams (for injury/illness) are: Ferrari: Luca Badoer (although I suspect they will snub himas they did in 1999 and maybe go for Liuzzi or possibly DC?) BAR: Anthony Davidson (no doubt here) Renault: Franck Montagny (could do a very admirable job in place of Fisi/Alonso, although they didn't give him the chance last year...maybe Kovalienen a long shot?) Williams: Antonio Pizzonia will get the nod here McLaren: Both Alex Wurz and de la Rosa could and would do a good job, although Wurz is official no.3 my inkling would be de la Rosa, is Wurz still having trouble fitting in the car? Sauber: Don't think they have an official third driver. What's Neel Jani doing these days? Liuzzi also a possibility. Red Bull: Whoever isn't driving out of Klien/Liuzzi Toyota: Ricardo Zonta would get the nod, but I'd like to see Panis back if possible. Jordan: Whow knows? Baumgartner is probably without a seat so will he go back to His old team as a tester/reserve? Minardi: Again, your guess is as good as mine. Leinders, Bruni, Pantano, Nissany. |

The Ferrari sub question is a very interesting one with lots of possibilities. It depends on two things. First whether it's Micheal or Rubinho whos out and second, at what point in the season. Now if it's late in the season and the titles are stiched up, then expect just a safe pair of hands, Badoer having been such a reliable servent of the team looking to be most likely. However, if Micheal were to go out early in the season for a long lay off, it could get very interesting. Whoever they signed would indicate the true level of belief the Scuderia has in Rubens. My bet is that they would take the oppertunity to land some future talent that could work with Micheal in the ramp down of his career. My best guess would be that they couldn't resist an attempt at Alonso. And if Briatore said no dice, my money would be on pot shots at Davison, then Button and conceivably even Raikkonen if Mclaren were looking iffy. The basis for my ordering being that they'd want potential world champ winner who would try to assume 1st in the pecking order.

Badoer's new contract at Ferrari guarantees him reserve driver status - and as such he would be called upon to race, according to the Scuderia itself.

IMHO, more likely to be Leinders, but only on the strength that he's consistently linked to Minardi, not for any other reason. |

Badoer's latest contract must stipulate that......I know that he was most disappointed to not have been given the sub role in 1999. Understandable. It did give Salo an opportunity in a good car though, which I was happy about.

JV replaced? It basically will depend on his economic relationship with Sauber: if he brings money, he'll not be fired.

Salo's performance at Hungary that year was awful - but came two weeks after doing well at Hockenheim.
He was quite hit and miss. |

Salo only did well at the fast circuits - he did nothing to tell me that Badoer couldn't've been equally competitive. I wonder whether Liuzzi's contract allows his to take a Ferrari drive if it becomes available - it might depend on whether he gets the nod at Red Bulkl.
Last season Gene, Pizzonia, Glock and Zonta all started races having not been in the initial team line-ups - that makes 24 in total, plus the third drivers (Davidson, Wirdheim, Briscoe, Leinders and Doornbos). 24 and 29 seem like good repsective guesses, although let's hope we don't get any injuries. |

It is given that he's not been in cars for a huge number.
I think Red Bull may have backed him in karting too... |
