Is this dumb?
OK, so discussion of one of the two categories doesn't belong here - but the other one has roofs, so it does.
The National Championship races for Formula Vee and Improved Production cars are on this weekend (October 14-15). One (Vees) is a Barbagallo, near Perth, the other at Baskerville, in Tasmania. Is it only me that thinks the categories should get together and orgainse a big 'Nationals' meeting annually and maybe get all their eggs in one basket? That way there'd be some decent publicity possible. What other 'Nationals' races are there? Perhaps they (whoever 'they' is) could resurrect the Tourist Trophy for sports cars. A meeting like this would be great for those who like good motor racing (without the superstars, the egos, the crowds of numblys and the high ticket prices.) Any thoughts? Kramer |

No not really. Its a point of veiw. I'd be keen to see how many V guys went to WA to race considering most work on a shoestring budget. Proddies in Tazzie on the same weekend. No problem. If they have the guts to run a stand alone meeting with themselves as the feature catagory, good luck to them. A couple of years back the IP guys used Island Magic as their nationals. Seemed to work ok. |

Problem is that if it looked like a success Cams would move to stop it.It is a way around Cams policy that would not be tolerated if it grew into a success. Some caregories have already been prevented by Cams from doing what ypu suggest.Would be possible in another place though!

To answer the original question, HQs also have a "Nationals" weekend and like the other two it is rotated annually by state.
Group N Historic Touring Cars also have something very similar, it is called the AHTCA Cup. I believe Formula ford are planning to do something along these lines next year at Morgan Park, i think it will be called the Formula Ford festival. |

Several Gemini racers made the trek down to Winton from Qld earlier this year and they are planning a bigger & better group next year.
As for the Formula Ford Festival that's already been done in Australia at Winton on several occasions back when FF was more popular than it is now. |

But, I think the Improved Proddy guys like to have their "Big Meeting" all to themselves. I remember when they came to Mallala a few years ago & they treated it like they were the number 1 category in Australia (for that day).
& good luck to em. Categories like Improved Proddy have the potential for this kind of meeting to become very big. |

Having just returned from Baskerville to find this thread, I am a little surprised that the question was asked.
For the record, the Hobart track is awesome, more undulations (Per KM) that almost any other track in Australia, and with an average lap speed not a great deal slower than Eastern Creek makes for a great driver's track. Unfortunately with the bulk of the Tas Govt $$$ going to Symmons Plains, the facilities would not have supported an additional 40 cars, and then there may have been some confusion for the 5500 (yep 5 and a half thousand, remember Tassie isnt that big!!) spectators who came and paid to watch as to who the main race was run between, had the FVees been holding their NAtional Titles there too.. Odviously I wasnt in Perth to see how everything went for the FVee guys, hopefully it was a good event. The 30+ cars at Baskerville (half of whom were from the mainland, representing WA, NT, QLD, SA, NSW and VIC) were all supported by crews who had a great time, with the only real hardship being the wind that did its best to blow ius all off the island, for five days straight!!! Cheers to Mark Perry and the Octagon team who organised the event, and to Cascade Berweries for making a pretty good Draught!! Oh yeah, we won! Check out some of the photos of the weekend, some great shots from Dave Clifford...... http://tassied.smugmug.com/Cars/241339 Last edited by rdmdog; 21 Oct 2006 at 15:06. |
