I think your all missing the point -- what you have to do is put all the drivers in order of achievements then test them all for driving ability, speak to them indervidually to assess their personality - then put them into a hat and pick one !!! like last year !!

I voted for Dan Eagling because, while not 'high profile' he is the only one who i think can really claim to deserve it as the others all had top rate, everything paid for drives.
As a second choice, England has impressed without a fortune. |

Every year, Autosport/the BRDC/McLaren/whoever try to pick a driver who they feel is most likely to get to F1. This doesn't just go on driver talent, but also the team of promoters/sponsors/money they have behind them, and the momentum they have in their career. Therefore, if they feel that a driver has had problems gaining funding in the past and they may have further problems in the future, they won't let them win. Last year, I believe that Steven Kane won over Robbie Kerr because, with a works Van Diemen drive lined up for 2002, it looked like he was going up, and had momentum. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but did that many people really expect Kerr to beat Courtney to the F3 title this year? I've voted for Jamie Green for a couple of reasons. One is that, I'll admit, I am biased towards Formula Renault, I've talked to the guy this year, watched him race, and think that he could have what it takes to make it. He's also tested, and even raced already, for Carlin, and done very well for an International F3 debut, which all points to good momentum to continue next year in British F3. Unlike any of the other finalists, 2002 was Green's first season of racing cars and by running very close to, and sometimes beating, Watts this season, he made an impressive debut. Faced with choosing two drivers from the same championship, and team, however, would they really choose the one that came second? I reckon Green or Carroll will win it. We'll find out soon enough I guess... Last edited by Paul Rayner; 28 Nov 2002 at 17:11. |

May i ask how you all seem to know how some of the finalists have had "top rate, everything paid for drives" when there are actually none of you associated with any of the drivers other than you have seen them in the press.
All of the drivers except Adam Carroll have paid their own budgets this year, Mr Sweeny paid for Mr Carroll. What gives you the impression that England has done what he has this year on "not a fortune" ? do you know something we all don't ? |

Why would Danny Watts want to waste his time and money on being in British F3 -- Its not like you get any recognition from being a british driver and winning that formula - he should save his cash and show his face around the f1 stage !!

Vortex - please don't assume that I'll state guesses as facts....you will be mistaken I don't think Dan Eagling will win, just that he desreves too. They only put him in to try to restore some credibility to the competition... |

well Carroll looked good in his debut F3 race the year before at the British GP support race , so i dont think his performances are not real at all....
i will go for Carroll , maybe Green if not . |

Adam gets my vote - having met him at circuits on race weekends he was always available to talk to us more mortals that are spectators. I then met him at a kart race in Milton Keynes where he raced for Autosport and he was most approachable and informative to both me and my twelve year old daughter. His results this season speak for themselves. Getting at the front of the grid in front of championship cars isn't just a result of him using Jag's old F3 cars - it's down to talent.

Tell me how a so called panel of experts could have chosen Steven Kane over Robbie Kerr? Clearly,by definition, every one of the annual nominees is talented but how could anybody with an ounce of motorsport knowledge fail to get that one right. For me the award lacks integrity and therefore credability. So what if the best driver has nothing but the £50k towards a future budget - clearly the money and the status of 'real' recognition can only help the cause. As long as drivers like Steven Kane are chosen the award has little true value.

Im not sure the title means anything. Are MclarenAutosport drivers being awarded reduced cost drives or free test because of that Diploma? If so its because of the results that got them th award. The title imo is meaningless

My point entirely. The award,if properly administered, should have so much status that F1 team managers would be seen forming an orderly queue at the recipients table!I doubt Ron Dennis can even remember Steven Kanes name and whats more probably doesn't care much either.Do you think Ron will turn up on the test day fuelled with excitement - nah, neither do I.It shouldn't be this way if the 'experts' had the balls to go for the real star of tomorrow. All you have to be is bloody quick - period.
