Cochrane Spits the Dummy

Listening to 94.9 fm in the car on way back to Toowoomba from QR this arvo.

The news said that at the VIP 500 lUnch at QR today AVESCO Chairman had a "Dummy Spit" (Probably fightened the large Friday Crowd would take away from him being in the spotlight).

Apparently he accused Queensland Events Corp of been lazy and not promoting the Event saying that this would be the last V8 Event at QR.

Didn't he say something similiar for Indy ?

He took the race from Sandown to QLD so he has nobody else to blame.

I must admit I nearly came close to punching him during an interview... "Put Tony, we've had a record crowd here, why aren't you going to come back?" "BSBSBSBSBSBSBBS..."

BTW- I wouldn't doubt that it was a record crowd. The Sunday crowd was about the same as last year (but not as big as 99), however, the Friday and Saturday crowds were very good.

Things may get even more interesting - if QR does not have a round in 2003, just where are the QLD based teams going to test ?. AVESCO rules state you must test, 1/-In your home state, 2/-Only at a venue where a round is held. TC could change rule #1, that would allow the QLD teams to test at Oran Park or Eastern Creek, but to change rule #2 would allow all the teams (in & out of QLD) to pick any test track they wanted. I have heard that QR may withdraw test bookings from the V8 teams immediately - so no pre-Bathurst testing for QLD based teams. I agree, why should they support the V8's if the V8's won't support them - let them test at the INDY circuit, or Morgan Park, or Lakeside - LOL.

Errrmm, I don't think they would knock back testing- that's money in the bank. The dilema is whether or not QR wants to put up with the BS, and tell TC to FO. This year was a breeze for QR with the promotion being outsourced to Octagon, but with a sanctioning fee of around $500,000, it's not very appealing to anyone. I feel sorry for VIP Petfoods, I hope that they don't get peaved and take their bat and ball home...

What is TC's problem with QLD raceway. I saw him on TV slagging them off. Is it just a money thing or is it something else?????

TC should be charged with bringing the sport into disrepute (nice spelling) and he looked like a fool when he was ranting and raving like a 2 year old for the TV.

Money- nothing more nothing less. Asking for over 1/2 a mil for a two driver race- the economics don't make sense. He wants the QLD Events Corporation to foot the bill, but it aint going to happen. The Willowbank Drag Strip and QEC released some interesting PR over the weekend...

Money - Thats what I thought, Where does all the money go that TC and the V8's make. I find it amazing that Bathurst ran without a title sponsor last year, Shell stopped being the title sponsor of the series and Canberra 2002 nearly ran without a title sponsor.

Its the same problem with f1 at the moment. so much money is being made but the people that are producing the money (teams & tracks) are not seeing a return for their investment - the profits are being taken out of the sport.

Its a shame and it could spell the downfall of the V8's

He also has an obsession with government money for a race.

It wouldn't suprise me if QR did decide to not let V8 teams test, sure they would definatly lose money, but they could do it in protest to not being on the calendar, maybe to get QLD based to teams to push AVESCO to keep a round other than Indy in the calendar. It doesn't really make sense not to have a round on a permanent circuit in a state where there are so many teams based there. I don't see this going through, TC will give in (just like with Wanneroo), unless Darlington Park suddenly becomes available or Morgan Park (i think thats it) gets upgraded (it is/was upgraded for this year wasn't it?)

Morgan Park aint going ever host a V8 round... neither is Darlington. There is one option, and that's QR. They'll go to QR when someone coughs up the dough. QR won't ban V8 testing- teams can test anywhere, they could change to Morgan Park, Darlington, Norwell etc, really won't be too much a drama. Why cut off the hand that feeds you?

Test anywhere? Not on tracks without a CAMS National Track Licence. The teams could not afford to carry the insurance that the CAMS Licenced Venues provide. The income from V8 testing is not as significant as the income from a round of the series (whether Octagon runs it or not)- and QR is so heavily booked with other events the shortfall in income may become quite small in the long term (a year or so). QR gets larger crowds to their Friday Night Burnout Comps than at a State Championship Race Meeting - they just may tell TC and the QLD based teams to "take a hike & get on yor bike to NSW". Where in Sydney could you accomodate some V8 Supercar Workshops?
