Perth back in the main game 2011! (With WA Gov't Assistance!)

Hey all picked this up on a NZ news website!
A commitment from the Western Australian government has resurrected Perth's V8 Supercars round.
Controversially cut from the 2010 calendar, the Perth round has been locked in again with a new long-term deal set to be announced by the end of the month.
The about-face came after the WA government reportedly committed $5 million to begin a major redevelopment of the Perth circuit and its pit facilities with more funding expected in the coming years.
V8 Supercars CEO Martin Whitaker confirmed on Friday that the 2011 championship would visit every state in Australia.
The Perth round is expected to be held in early June next year.
"Perth is not only good for our fans but also for our major sponsors and we all want to keep WA on the calendar," Whitaker told BigPond Sport.
"As we've said all along we are on track to make an announcement by the end of July.

Same murmurings in Speedcafe earlier this week:
http://www.speedcafe.com.au/2010/07/...s-much-as-v8s/

There was no funding provided in the last WA State Budget.

A number of V8 teams made token visits to WA in this current season as required by their sponsorship arrangements. I understand a couple of these sponsors have demanded a race or a reduction in the team sponsorship dollars.

Cochrane left a 'messed nest' in WA, the NSW/Homebush negotiations havent helped. The new face of Martin Whittaker is a godsend.

the spin doctors at work

Seems VESAs new faces are knocking on the door of Eventscorp WA, looking to back door the WASCC, the mob they expelled* this year.

* expelled: an interesting selection of word, compared with scrapped a few weeks earlier!
'After being expelled from the 2010 calendar, Perth’s V8 Supercar event at Barbagallo Raceway is set to crack an exciting new long-term deal.'
http://www.v8supercars.com.au/newsar...1/default.aspx

Be an interesting interface between 'not for profit' volunteers (WASCC members) & those motivated only by/for profit, if/when this arrangement for a V8 round in 2011 eventuates.

VESA are running behind schedule based on its own spin doctoring:
'V8 Supercars scrapped this year’s BigPond 300, which was due to take place from June 4-6, from the 2010 calendar after it failed to come to a satisfactory agreement with the WA Sporting Car Club (WASCC).

In the lead-up to last year’s V8 event at Barbagallo, the Western Australian Government pledged $5 million for track widening and surfacing, improving safety fencing and upgrading communications equipment.

Work was scheduled to start in the first quarter of this year, but will not begin until after the details are finalised, which should be next month.'
http://www.v8supercars.com.au/newsar...5/default.aspx

No announcement in June as suggested. The good guy/bad guy routine not cutting through?

How many seconds do you think passed between the announcement that the Red Bull Air Race was off, and the Black Wiggle getting Tourism WA on the blower about spending a bucketload on Wanneroo to get the V8's back????

I'd say less than ten............

"It highlights the fact that WA is one of the most remote capital cities in WA," he told ABC Radio.
That seems a fairly irrefutable statement. Exactly how many capital cities does WA have for one of them to be more remote...

changes in local management

timing not good at the WA Sporting Car Club with the General Manager moving out, moving on:

As you may or may not be aware, I will be leaving my position as General Manager of the WA Sporting Car Club today and will no longer be involved with the day to day management of the club.

A change in the future direction of the club will see a new position for a CEO open up at the WA Sporting Car Club.

Cheers

Peter Thornell

General Manager

WA Sporting Car Club Inc

The change in direction eluded to, is NOT universally accepted by many WASCC members.

I've heard that statement before and it does seem ambigous. What they're referring to is that Perth is further from the nearest capital than any other capital city on Earth.

I know what they meant to say, but read again what they actually committed to print. WA is the most remote capital in WA. Position available for half-decent proof reader methinks.

On that point, if the cars are already in planes, how good would it be to see the V8's somewhere like Spa...even silverstone?

Good for WA motorsport.
