What is a wildcard rider?

Hi all.I was watching the MotoGp at Assen and the commentator was saying something about someone being a wildcard rider.What is a wildcard rider?

hoonboyz should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
wildcards are riders put in by that Nations organising body for that GP only .

Wildcards are usually riders from the local championship, who, with their team and bike, compete in the championship rounds in their own country.

It's most common in Superbike racing, where Britain, Japan and the US have very strong local championships involving international-class machinery. On tracks they know, these guys often challenge the regulars, and soemtimes win. The likes of Katoh, Abe, Bayliss and Hodgson first came to international prominance from wildcard rides
