The GT2 is only a 'top of the line' road car that was never meant to race and there isn't really a big need for a GT2 racer when the GT3 is so good. The GT3 is also much cheaper to develop and run. It would have been fun to see a GT2 RS though.
I think this has been discussed here before but i can't remember what was said.... |

I've been told the A.C.O. GTS rules don't favor turbos either.

I remember Porsche stating right from the start that the GT2 wouldn't be developed for competition.

Afterall the Toyota GT-ONE did pretty well. As for GTS, the original 911 GT2 was at the end of its lifespan when the Viper came out. The new GTS Panoz is supposed to have a turbo engine so they must think the regs are workable for turbo GTS cars. |

I heard from different sources from german teams who run 996 Turbo ;-) that the turbo is the problem when you want to build up an 996GT2 road car into a race version. Not sure what exactly (dimension or position). And to solve that you need a lot of development.

There will be a new 911 released in the next 12 months. One model will use the V8 engine from the Cayenne.
Could be the ideal solution for teams who want to build there own GTS spec 911, based on the GT3-RSR. Then again the Carrera GT will be made in pretty high numbers so this may be a good base for a new private built GTS car. |

At the very least, the 996 GT2 feels as though the Porsche Factory has a model that keeps a foot in the door. If circumstances develop to the point where a twin turbo production-based machine would be suited for racing, it's there.
Then again, so is a V10 carbon 2-seater . . . |

And a damn shame too. Condemned a lot of Porsche teams - Roock, Freisinger, Konrad - to pootling around at the back of the field, jumping ship to another marque or dropping down to N-GT.
