Libre race question
I have a vague recollection that there was a type of libre race, maybe with a big prize fund, one year at Brands Hatch in the early 70's.
As well as the usual F5000 etc there was a CanAm shadow entered and maybe others as well. I have searched the web and can find no trace of it. My question is simple, did the race in fact happen or did I dream it up after reading AutoSport and then eating cheese before bed? Maybe the Shadow was doing a demo at the meeting? |

It was the Rothmans 50000 in 1972. A bit of Googling will provide plenty of information.

I have seen a photo of some form of challenge race/ Demo between the UOP F1 Shadow and the UOP sponsored Can Am car but I think that this was in the US... late 70's???

I was at the 50,000 at Brands. A bit of a damp squib really. Interestingly the BRM's added extra fuel tank space and the P160B become a P160P - as it looked pregnant!
The Shadow showdown was at Watkins Glen in 1974, but was only the Can Am cars. George Follmer and Jackie Oliver had been at each others throats all year so the had a winner tacks all race before the Grand Prix (and Jean Pierre Jarier joined in as well). Again a bit dull as there were only three cars in it, although the cars themselves were pretty spectacular. |

Around early 80s US F5000 cars were fitted with Can-Am type bodywork and merged with the CanAm sports cars.I went to one of these at Trois Rivieres in 1984.
